The following are the normal reference ranges for the above:
Total cholesterol- 112-200
Triglycerides- 10-190
HDL- 40-85 (this is the "good" cholesterol)
LDL (calculated)- 65-130 (this is the "bad cholesterol"

Your total cholesterol is way too high.....It should be 200 or less.
And I am surprised your doctor feels that an LDL of 180 is okay. This is very high. Given that your 'good' cholesterol, although within the ref range, is on the low side, it is not enough to offset the potential risk of such a high LDL.

You doctor is ill-informed if not downright negligent. Has he actually seen the report?

Was this a fasting blood test?

Please call him ....this is not okay. But don't get anxious....diet changes and exercise can usually fix your #s easily...(last resort would be meds.)

Total cholesterol ranges are age group dependent. I think 267 is high for any age group. Incidentally, total cholesterol is triglycerides divided by 5 (your's is 173/5=35) + HDL + LDL, which is 35+52+180=267. LDL I believe is way high, HDL is pretty good (a lot of folks envy you for that reading). Your ratio of total cholesterol to HDL is 267/52 = 5.13 This number (I've read) is desired to be below 5. Look up Dr. Kenneth Copeland's books on Cholesterol and you might find some very useful info(I can't find my copy right now.)

Hi,
Thank you both for your response. This was fasting. i have on the back for my paper an explanation of these results.
It just reinforces what the 2 of you have said.
here is what it said.
For most people a total cholesterol level of less then 240 is desirable.
High HDL is good for your heart. HDL levels of less than 40 for men and less than 45 for women can increase your risk of heart disease.
For most people, an LDL level under 130 is dessirable.
She did see the paper.. she had to sign off on it.
so I should call her and have her explain it to me?

Dragon- The total cholesterol info on that sheet is WAYout of date. I don't know any doctor who would be happy with your total chol.# unless your HDL was REALLY high and your LDL very low. So call her and tell her that The American Heart Assoc. et al, all recommend the reference ranges I posted above. Your LDL needs to come down for sure.
Here's a very good simple overview of cholesterol and what is ideal etc.: It's even slightly "stricter" than the numbers I posted! http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/chol/wyntk.htm

I am very curious to hear your doctor's response.
