View Full Version : Should I Get Re-Tested?

A month ago, I did a 12-hour fast prior to a cholesterol/glucose screening and my cholesterol came back at 177 overall, 88 LDL, 27 HDL, 314 tri's. Even though I fasted for the full 12 hours leading up to the test, I ate a huge amount of carbs (mashed potatoes, stuffing, etc) right before the cutoff. Should I retest, avoiding abnormal amounts of carbs for a bit longer than 12 hours?

I'm 31, 50lbs overweight-down from 80lbs overweight, exercising regularly the past few weeks and eating properly (less meat & breads, more fruits & veggies).

starling,
I would definitey do as you describe. Go easier on the fast hit carbs the night before the test. Those high triglycerides of yours are probably reflective of high carbs more than anything else. Maybe spinach instead of mashed potatoes.
I once had 2 manhattans before testing and came up with triglycerides over 600. Test was a total waste of time and money.

The exercise, diet and weight loss are going to make a difference in the numbers anyway. Yes, I would go ahead and be tested again. If nothing else it will show you what you have accomplished with the hard work and make you even more determined to live a healthy lifestyle.
