I am always interested in reports of garlic having significant effect on choesterol as there is a fairly solid body of research that says this should not happen. Many controlled trials that show no reductions or statistically minor reductions. So, reports of significant reductions from alicin is an interesting piece of info. What were your numbers? Alicin is simply a cmponent of garlic. If you can eat garlic, you can likely take alicin. peregrine 10-19-2003, 10:30 AM And ... does it produce garlic breath? ARIZONA73 10-19-2003, 11:36 AM Well, eating garlic certainly will. Allicin is the component in garlic which is responsible for its easily identifiable odor. However, if you were to use an enteric coated garlic supplement which has been standardized for allicin, there really shouldn't be any tell-tale breath odor. This is because these tablets are designed to dissolve in the small intestine, not inside your stomach. More often than not, I don't experience any side effects from these supplements. Occassionally, however, I will experience some minor gastrointestinal discomfort. But not too often, and it seldom lasts very long. WesCorb 10-19-2003, 01:40 PM Just how much garlic supplementation were you taking daily to change your cholesterol and how much did it change? ARIZONA73 10-19-2003, 02:40 PM I'd still like to hear from Rocko and find out how much his cholesterol dropped. As for myself, I have not noticed any significant change in my total cholesterol, although it did seem to raise my HDL. But either way, garlic can help reduce your risk of developing heart disease. It acts as a natural anticoagulant in the blood, and helps to reduce LDL oxidation. A study in Germany showed that garlic supplements increases the flexibility of the aorta, the main artery which naturally stiffens with age. Another German study suggests that garlic not only helps prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries, but may even reduce it. So you see, there may still be benefits associated with increased garlic intake that aren't reflected in numbers. |
