View Full Version : Why do Dr's. just prescribe meds?

I am writing because I am frustrated with my husband and his Dr. He is 50; had a heart attack and triple by-pass at 47. (no warning whatsoever). He was on 20 mgs. of Zocor, and his Dr. just upped it to 40mgs. I have been trying to get him to eat healthier (got a lot of suggestions from this board!) and do some excersise, even just walking - but he doesn't listen to me. His Dr. has said NOTHING to him about life-style changes, which makes me mad because I think he would listen to him. He just doubles the dose of Zocor, without telling him any of the risks. His last test results showed the cholestrol a little high - I think a total of around 220 and HDL +/-35. His trigs were the worst around 250. He loves pasta and bread and eats hardly any fruits and vegetables. (although there are always plenty in the house) I guess there is really no answer to this but I just have to vent.

You cannot make him take care of himself. He has to want it for himself. I saw my mother do it with my father after his heart attack. She died 3 years ago and he is still living. I assume you are the one who does most of the cooking. What you can do is try to prepare things in a heart healthy way so that at least some of his eating habits are good. If he eats things that are not good for him he chooses that knowing full well that it is not good for him. You just can't make someone else live a healthy lifestyle although I know you mean well. Your doctor may know that he is not going to do as he is told from past experience and that is why he prescribed the medicine.
