Hi All:

I just received my numbers they are Triglycerides: 81, HDL: 56, LDL: 228 total Cholesterol: 302.

I am 43 years old (doesn't seem possible but I am). Have gained a couple of pounds in the last year. My diet is great mostly fruits and veggies.

My mother has high cholesterol and my father died at 41 from a massive heart attack (not sure if he had cholesterol problems or not... he had a lot of radiation due to cancer and he had had two operations in two days before he died).

My doctor is out but wanted to see me this week. The receptionist can't fit me until next Monday but she is going to talk to him about what he wants to do when he comes in tomorrow.

Where do I start with this all? I am scared stiff.

Thank you for any advice that you might have to offer.

Hi Kimianne,
I'm 30 and my cholesterol is high due to heredity . I don't need meds for it but I find it 's hard to get down . Anways I try to eat oatmeal and things with wholewheat and fibre , lots of fruits and veggies esp. dark green stuff ..lay off the pasta and refined sugars , drink lots of water and get some kind of exercise daily . I'm by far no expert but I know it requires a lifestyle change . I tried soymilk as opposed to dairy and instead of not allowing anything like sweets and such ..smaller portions ..less often ...not sure if that even applies to cholesterol lowering ..also I hardly ever eat icecream
take care and good luck !

Kimianne,

Here are your ratios which are based on the above numbers you gave:

LDl/HDL ratio: 228 divided by 56= 4.07/1 (Should be <3.0)
TC/HDL ratio: 302 divided by 56= 5.39/1 (Should be <4.0)

Your LDL is obviously a bit too high. You might want to try taffyboyo's recipe of all natural supplements that worked for me before you let the doc convince you that you need a statin.

Qty (1) 600 mg. tab of Nature's Plus Red yeast rice (evening)
Qty (1) 50-100 mg. softgel of CoQ10
600 mg. EPA/400 mg. DHA fish oil capsules (Usually 3-4 caps/ day)
Qty (1) Garlic factors 6,250 mcg of garlic allicin

It's strange how the guidelines for the introduction of statin therapy varies so much in the USA to those over here.

The following info is a UK GP's guideline for the onset of Statin therapy.

The following guideline is used by a UK doctor for patients with no other health problems.

The LDL/HDL ratio is the more important ratio than total cholesterol/HDL because LDL is a measure of bad cholesterol and HDL is a measure of good cholesterol. LDL/HDL is therefore an accurate measure of heart disease. The risk levels of different values of LDL/HDL ratios are:

Low Risk: 3.3 - 4.4
Average Risk: 4.4 - 7.1
Moderate Risk: 7.1 - 11.0
High Risk: 11.0

The following people require treatment, irrespective of their baseline lipid measurements:

People with established cardiovascular disease (CVD).
People with a high risk (more than 20%) of developing CVD within 10 years.
Most people with diabetes.

The following people require treatment regardless of risk:

People with a total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio of 6 or more (TC/HDL >= 6).
People with familial hyperlipidaemias.

People with both raised total cholesterol (TC) and raised TG are at greater risk of CHD than are people who just have raised TC.

Thank you for your replies everyone!

The doctor's office called and they can get me in tomorrow.

The Mayor: I have printed your list and am going to bring it with me. Apparently, they have also diagnosed me with borderline diabetes (hereditary) and I just want to make sure that I do not take anything that will interfere with that or medications for it.

The very frustrating part of all of this is that my diet is excellent. I could exercise more but other than that it really can't be anything that I am doing.

Again, thanks. I am sure that I will be on this board a lot more now.
