There is a big controversy about the benefits of coconut oil (which contains a lot of saturated fat). Some say it is good for you, some say it is bad for you. Who is right?

shufflejog,
My understanding is that the widespread misconception that coconut oil is bad for you stems from a 40 yr. old study that used hydrogenated coconut oil. Most of us know today that the process of hydrogenation creates "trans fatty acids" which are toxic. These substances are not present in natural coconut oil.
However different recent studies show that coconut oil may be beneficial in preventing heart disease and other studies show no change in serum cholesterol from taking coconut oil. Hence the jury is still out I believe on the benefits of taking coconut oil. Hope this helps.
