I have been fighting a head cold for days and when i sleep i hear these different pitched tones in my ear (right). could this be tinnitus?

It could be, tinnitus certainly does make alot of different sounds in my head but as you say you have a head cold it could just be that your ears are abit blocked and affecting your hearing abit. I would wait until your cold has cleared up before worrying about tinnitus, the noises will probably go along with the cold.
