Can TMJ cause knot like swollen areas under the ear, along the jaw and up onto the face?

Yes it can - sometimes the "knots" may be hard and somewhat defined - and can be misdiagnosed as cysts, swollen or infected lymph nodes or salivary glands, etc. Sometimes just a general swelling and hardness will occur that seems to encompass a widespread area like the lower left side of the jaw or the area in front of the ear, etc.

Thank you, that puts my mind at ease a bit. Is there anything that helps the painful lumps go away. It has been a week and it seems to be getting worse : (

Ice and or heat packs may help them as well as no wide opening or prolonged opening of the mouth, a soft diet, no heavy chewing, anti-inflamatory meds or NSAIDs. Sometimes its not that a muscle actually has a knot per se but is basically over worked and is therefore has become over developed - more so where an entire area seems larger, swollen or firmer (if not hard). Obviously aggravating or over untilizing the jaws and surrounding msucles will affect their ability to recover and/or return to a normal state. Also some people do see improvement thru other alternative treatments such as accupuncture, PT therapy which can include massage therapy, tens unit, ultra sound, etc as well as splint therapy.

How long can I expect this really bad flare up to last? The doctor gave me 10 mil. of flexaril that does not seem to do anything!

It can last several weeks to a few months - its hard to say. If after a month with no improvement then at the very least your dentist or dr should have a tomogram or MRI done to see if this is more than just inflamation such as disc displacement or joint issue, etc.

Muscle relaxants such as flexeril may help, an anti-inflamatory may help as well like an NSAID - but in addition to that you could ask your dr to send you for PT for tmj - depending on the therapist, most PT for tmj include moist heat compresses, ultra sound therapy, tens unit and deep tissue massages - and most medical insurances will cover it.
