01-27-2003, 06:16 AM
I had sex with someone who is positive. I have been experiencing pains in my body for the last three weeks. under my arms and my groin but no swelling just quick sharp pains. im also getting the pains in my chest and back. I am so scared and feel like killing myslef I don't think I can carry on like this. I really want the pains to stop as its affecting my life. I can't sleep and I have stopped eating Im not able to do my job properly,. getting to work late and I have become withdrawn even my family have noticed that there is something wrong. Its too early to get tested so what can I do . I try not to think about it and then the pains hit me I have no mind control over them. I am so unhappy I wish i was dead. I have spoken to help lines in the uk where I live and they have not been very forthcoming. I wnet to the Clinic and the Doctor told me that I shoul dhave a rash over my body but I have no rash just itchy pains. I can't take this anymore

Hi JohnBlue/Tinker/Anyone Please advice,
Please reply, I got tested after 4 weeks and after 8 weeks after possible exposure and the test came back -ve. I have 2 swollen glands under my chin, I am not sure it is because of rubbing or why it showed up at first place coz I never had one. Then one day I felt burning/pain under my right ear(2 days before my 8 weeks Home Access test) and it got elevated a bit which in not suppressed yet So I decided to get tested again (The 8th week test) and it came back -ve.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THESE RESULTS IN THIS SCENARIO? God forbid had it been something it would have showed up. I have been having this swollen node since week 4th, (The same day I went for my 4th week test). Please please reply it has been very depressing and grilling period of my life and I will never ever forget this. I am also feeling kind of hurting and itching in my lymph node today again.

Scared and worried, you didn't state whether you used a condom. If one was used you have a very small chance if any of being infected.

Not all people who immediately contract HIV show any symptoms. You need to get tested to know for sure. If if the sex was unprotected and was just a 1 time exposure, you still only have a very small chance of being infected.

Keep in touch and let us know what you decide to do.

scared and worried, you gotta relax, no matter what the situation. You did not say whether you were male or female, age etc. Look, everyone who feels that they encountered this type of situation will tell you that they freaked out. Stress and worry of the sort that you described can physically make you ill with all sorts of symptoms. I know, believe me, I was in same situation as you. Like I said, first you take a deepbreath, don't ever wish you were dead. I remember after thinking I was exposed to HIV, every thing on my body became a nightmare to me. I swore I had swollen glands, my tongue looked to me like I had thrush, My throat became sore. All this worry even though the risk was so small due to what I had done sexually. There are different levels of risk depending on whether you are male or female, the type of sex and whether protected or not, etc., so alot depends on what you did or did not do. I'm not trying to get personal, but if you want to write more and give any major details, maybe we could offer you some advice or comfort. OK, relax and one step at a time. Remember what I said, all this worrying creates symptoms that may not even really be there. You are worrying yourself sick over something that may not exist. Please write back, I know you must be feeling awful.

Scared and worried, please try to take it easy...I know it is not, and like you I am going through a very very hard time. Yes, you mention the person you have been with is positive, which is a risk impossible to overlook.

But you have not established if your exposure was protected or unprotected. On the other hand, the symptoms you are experiencing do not quite relate to HIV alone.

I had an exposure about month and a half ago...and I have experienced the most scary symptoms, like swollen cervical nodes, sore throat, diarrhea, fevers...you name it, I have it...nevertheless I still have not tested and anxiety is taking its toll on me. I suggest that you try to avoid just that as much as you can...like they said here...call the CDC, visit this forum and the one at AIDSmeds.com, not to look for symptoms, but to see that there are many people in your boat and they support each other.

I hope taht when you do test, you come out negative. I cant tell you to modify your sexual behavior towards that person, as I dont know what kind of relaitonship you have, all I can say is that be very careful.

You have my support and my prayers.

Bad luck your test at 8 weeks is approx 95% accurate. The average window period is actually 25 days. You need to test once more at 90 days for 100% accuracy chances are very good you will get another - result.

swollen lymph nodes can be a thousand different things. Its unlikely they are HIV related.
