Julie,
I am so sorry to hear about your sleep troubles. When my insomnia first started many years ago, I tried every over the counter remedy available, including sleeping pills (like Sominex, Tylenol PM, etc.) as well as herbal supplements that allegedly aid sleep (Valerian, HTP, St. John's Wort, Kava Kava, Melatonin). Obviously, you can experiment with these, as well as herbal teas, aromatherapy, massage, etc., but personally, I did not find any of these to be helpful. A visit to a sleep specialist is what I would recommend for you if you exhaust (no pun intended) all your attempts to treat your insomnia with OTC products. There is no shame in needing professional help to get your sleep back on track.
You might benefit from sleep hygiene practices as well, as they work for many people who have developed bad habits at bed time. If not, take the first step toward getting professional help before you go too long without quality sleep so that you reduce your risk of developing other health problems.
Good luck, and let us know how you're doing.
Blessings,
TexMom

my doctor prescribed me amitryptaline. its non-addictive, and i'll testify to that and it really does help me get to sleep.. its much better than any over the counter crap, that doesnt work for me. its an anti-depressant but its also used as a pain killer, and in my case to help sleep. it will definetly make you tired but the next morning you dont feel any effects of it at all unless you take too much. (i took 100 mg once and it made me feel a tad tired in the morning) but as long as you keep it under 50 mg per night that its needed it will be ok. it looses its effectiveness if taken many nights in a row but other than that it works pretty good. maybe ask your doctor about it
