Hi Everyone,
I am now 5 weeks PO from a Keller Bunionectomy. My last PO visit was last week and Dr. says everything looks great. I am to start transitioning out of my surgical shoe and into a sneaker for 30 minutes a day and he wants me to start moving my toe back and forth each day as PT.
At this time (5 weeks) my incision is closed but extremely irritated. The skin around it on both sides feels like a terrible sunburn. No matter what I put on it the skin feels like it's on fire. Until today it was still red and slightly warm. My hubby (veterinarian) tells me that the subcutaneous sutures are disolving and that causes tissue inflamation underneath the skin and that is probably what I am feeling...Have any of you experienced this so long after your surgery? I just saw my Dr. last week and after telling me everything was great I thought I would tough it out and see what happens. I can't get into the sneaker yet but I am walking without my surgical shoe for short distances. He also told me to rub lotion with Vit e on the incision daily which I am doing. The incision is completely closed and not oozing. Swelling is way down and all the bruising has disappeared.
Today I felt much better but putting anything against the skin near my incision is tough, Just thought I would ask all of you veterans if you had any experience with this.
Thanks....

It's possible you are having an allergic reaction to the vitamin E ointment or something else you've been putting on it.

Hi Jane,
The irritation started long before I started using anything on the skin . I've even used Neosporin Ointment and Cortisone Cream. Now I am wondering if I am allergic to the bandaging material the Dr. had me wrapped in. He removed the large wrap last week and now I only have a small "non sticky" type pad covering the incision. There is no way I can go without anything on it. It is just too sore for even a sock against the skin.
Guess it's time to check in with him. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your reply....

i sure hope it is not some kind of infection. i dont know why it should be irritated so much. can you put some kind of tape on it when you wear shoes?

It's feeling a little better today. I stopped putting a "dressing" on it and just have a golf sock over my foot. I did call the Dr. and will see him tomorrow morning. I just want to be sure everything is A-OK. If I do have a skin inefection I think it's slight.
We're any of you able to put on a shoe 2 5-6 weeks? The swelling is almost gone, it's just the irritated skin that is bothering me. I can actually place my foot square on the carpet now... HOORAY....that's progress...
Thanks everyone..

"I've even used Neosporin Ointment and Cortisone Cream."
It could be that you are having a reaction to the Neosporin too. My skin is very sensitive to adhesive in bandaids, tapes and bandages. I scratched around a bandaid to the point of giving myself blisters one time. I went to the doctor and he suggested that it was probably the Neosporin more than the bandaid. So I used a little Neosporin (and nothing else) on a little scratch on my leg and wouldn't you know it - I couldn't quit scratching! So now I no longer use any over-the-counter triple antibiotic. I'm still sensitive to the adhesives but the two together just about drove me insane!

Hello Everyone,
Just got back from my appointment. My problem is just plain 'ole swelling and lots of it...my insicion is very angry looking as is the tissue surrounding it and my foot is sore when you press on the skin. Subcutaneous sutures are dissolving at this time as well. There are only 3 of those babes and he said they might even "pop" through the skin and cause a blister and then go away. Dr. says my foot is very swollen and some people are more lucky than others in their struggle with this. So, I am now on Naprosyn 500mg twice daily for the next 2 weeks with instructions to keep elevating and icing as needed.
I am introducing hubby to the vaccum cleaner, dishwater and trash can.....I can still drive so life isn't too bad....still have loads of books to catch up on and a never ending supply of Netflix movies and needlepoint.
It was reassuring to know I don't have an infection. I can try a sneaker again in 10 days and see if it's better by then....
Thanks everyone...Hope you are all doing great..

Debbie,
The "meet & greet" didn't go over too well. Now I have 3 days worth of golden retriever hair on the floor.....:D Maybe tomorrow!
Good news, I feel as though I have turned the corner on this painful foot. I soaked my foot last night and WOW, all the dead skin came off. It felt sooo good....The Naprosyn and icing are really helping.....next step will be to try the sneaker but will wait another week for that...Most of the scabs have come off the incision which is a relief.....
Have a great weekend..

stitcher, glad your foot is coming along. i too was so thrilled when i finally was able to shower and wash the foot. it was a process for me, and more came off each time. also, is seems like the incision, although i gingerly cleaned it, took some time. it peeled like a sunburn. and one night my foot was itchy in my sleep and i used my other foots toes to scratch. the doctor took one look at it and said "i see it was itchy". the skin was all tender around where the pin had come out, as i had apparently scratched the area. also, i had some small scabs where the end of a bandaid was. i seem to have reactions sometimes now to the bandaid, but not all brands. my mother is also sensitive to the 'base' in some of the antibiotic creams. i was told i could start bearing weight and try shoe at 3 weeks but misunderstood, so had 2 extra weeks of healing. now it is fine in shoe, teeny bit of swelling, and sometimes the shoe presses in a spot or two on side of foot. i think it is sensitive as i walked on the 'side' for so long. a few more soaks for your foot should feel really good. D
