whoa!.....i didnt realise the cast would be so heavy - its like having a couple of bricks tied to my leg.

i'm hobbling around on crutches in between laying in bed or on the couch awaiting my first post op appointment which hopefully involves getting this cast off - i hate it. the first 2 days in hospital were spent on a morphine drip
which definately helped with the pain but also helped me get extremely constipated so i've backed right off the heavy pain killers now. surgeon said it all went well , so i guess its wait and see.
i so hope all this pain is worth it - my back and hips are killing me, but then again it was never going to be a walk in the park i spose.

anyway back to bed, speak soon!

Yeah, the initial cast is usually made from plaster, so it is quite heavy. The subsequent cast(s) should be fiberglass, which are lighter. I had issues with constipation due to pain meds as well and just took Senna (or any brand of softener, not laxative)...feels a lot better not to have to deal with that too! Have you looked into a knee scooter? It made my life a lot easier...and I didn't have to haul my cast/foot around! Anyway, glad to hear it went well! Good luck as you continue to recover!

thanks for the reply sunny - yes i think i might look into the knee scooter idea, its got to be easier than the alternative. anyway the plaster comes off in 5 days so i have that to look forward to.

julsim, hope you get a lighter cast soon. just a thought, i know many people dont like it, but i found prune juice in the evening really helped, along with the sodium pills (softener). i take them anyway, because the calcium i take is constipating too. its nice i had to find that out myself after many years on the calcium! also, i do well if i have oatmeal three or more times per week in a.m. i have 1/3c oatmeal and half that amount or so of bran added, twice as much water. works great. i usually put some raisins in as well.
