Well tomorrow it will be 3 wks since my bunion surgery and my big toe is still stiff and i really cant move it very much, I am getting nervous because by now i thought i would have more movement with it. It dosent touch the ground when i try to flatten my foot, which i really cant do without it hurting. Am i expecting to much to soon or could there be something wrong? Also since i had my surgery my foot is so dry and cracked it looks so bad. Any suggestions for that? Iam also still using crutches. I can put weight on my heel but thats about it. Thank you all so much for any help you can give me.

i think it sounds too early yet, when it is time for pt, your toe should loosen up, but it will take a lot work.

It does take time. I had surgery March 19 and I've been out of the boot since the beginning of June and my toe is just now starting to touch the ground without me forcing it down. I still have to push to get it down to what I think is a "normal" amount but I know I still have to work at it.

As for the cracking, are you allowed to use lotion? My doctor said I could as long as it wasn't near the incision site. It felt like Heaven on earth when I was able to lotion up again!

Are you still wearing the surgical shoe? If so, the shoe is also a splint and helps prevent the weight from pushing the toe down. The shoe more or less makes you walk with weight on the heel. I had my surgical shoe until five weeks. I think you are on track. When you can start walking with a real shoe, you will use your toes more for balance.

Ok that makes sence about the shoe. Iam still wearing it. I tryed to get on my sneaker, there was no way that was going on. I still have swelling and my foot is discolored. I tryed to put my toe down and thats no happening.

hi ninarbo. i was not allowed to get my foot wet until after the pin came out at three weeks. my pin had slipped inside the foot, so another 10 days while the stitch healed from that! my toe, well it doesnt bend at the knuckle yet, but it moves up and down. doc was pleased at 6 weeks check and said i was ahead of many of his other patients. he said i would probably never 'curl' the toe like before, nor the second toe as it was pressured by the bunion. is there anyone out there who HAS got back full flexion in the big toe?? perhaps he was saying this to me because i am 50 and 'full figured' (fat) with a sedentary job. he could be predicting the odds!! when i finally could shower and soak my foot, it seemed to take a few days. the skin around the incision peeled as if it had been sunburned. and it took me awhile rubbing and working the skin after second shower to get rid of all the dead skin. then it healed better. but again, i didnt do that til 5 1/2 weeks. i could get my sneaker on then, but it is a extremely generous toe box, in a wide shoe. and for that week, a bit of swelling in am made the shoe press on the outside of foot, but is ok now at 6wks 5 days post op. 98% of swelling gone

oh yes, as for the toes not hitting ground. if i do have swelling, it is on the underside and keeps the toe not on ground. second toe also, but will come with time.

i know how frustrating this is. try to be more patient and give yourself time to recover. the foot just takes so much time.
