Every few months or so, i'll wake up, barely though, but my eyes are open. I find that i can not move my body at all! The more i try the less i can move, i sweat buckets and panic. However, I find that if i try to calm myself down, and stop struggling, movement is regained, but it drains all my energy, and i fall back to sleep. I wake up unsure if it happened.

It's called sleep paralysis, and it's usually harmless if scary. It's not uncommon.

Basically, when you are dreaming, your body is paralyzed normally. You think that you are walking or whatever, but you are really lying motionless. Some people occasionally suffer a... disruption in the process that makes them paralyzed while aware of the fact and partially awake. Some people also have vivid hallucinations. It's possible that people who claim they've been abducted by aliens while sleeping in fact experienced a particularly nasty episode of sleep paralysis.

Stress and irregular sleep can make it more frequent, there are medications that can help prevent it if it becomes a real problem.

Me too! I usually concentrate really hard (and I mean REALLY HARD) on trying to move a finger, and once I'm able to, I snap right out of it.

Do you have other sleep abnormalities too, like excessive sleepiness during the day?

I had the same thing happen to me when I was 15. It lasted for less than a year, so it may have been triggered by hormones. When it happened, I could actually feel the weight of my body, and it felt like someone was holding me down. I also had an auditory hallucination once which was terrifying. Thankfully, I grew out of it. I think one poster already mentioned it, but try to concentrate on waking up and moving a toe or finger, and keep saying, "wake up". I would also talk to a doctor.

HELP!! I have in the last while been suffering from Sleep Paralysis and It scares me :( I wake up, well I think Im awake and I'm unable to move, I have to concentrate really hard on my toes or fingers and eventually I am able to move a toe or finger which then snaps me out of it. But it still worries me :(
Is it linked with my Epilepsy? Can I stop it?

It's a perfectly normal thing. I recommend you read up on lucid dreaming - you are in a prime position to enjoy it with minimal work :)

It's important to look at everything else going on in your life because sleep paralysis is NOT a normal thing, is not related to lucid dreaming and can be a sign that something is wrong with your sleep.

What is happening during sleep paralysis is your body is skipping the steps between REM sleep and being awake so you are still in that paralyzed dream state even though you are awake. Frequently these are accompanied by hallucinations. The most common is the sensation of something sitting on your chest or hearing voices.

Sleep paralysis only happens under a state of sleep deprivation. If you're getting a normal amount of sleep every night and still experiencing this, something is most likely messed up about your sleep and causing it not to be restorative. The two most common causes of sleep paralysis when you are getting normal amounts of sleep are sleep apnea and narcolepsy. If you are getting a normal amount of sleep (around 8 hours) most nights and are still having these episodes along with still being very tired during the day you should really talk to a sleep doctor. Its also not connect to epilepsy or anything like that.

However, if you're getting really random sleep and not many regular hours its just a symptom of these bad habits.
