ice and elevation. lots of both!! if you've got a cast, try an ice pack behind your knee. it really does help.

also, i was told to put the ice pak around the ankle, as there was a pin sticking out of foot that you dont want to disturb, and putting ice right on the surgery was a no no also. all blood going to the foot comes through the ankle, so ice the ankle. and elevate, elevate, elevate! and get lots of rest so body can rejuvenate. best of healing to you. ELEVATION is the most important my doctor said. and ice will go through a cast. it's not as noticeable but it does.

oops, guess you'll have to ice behind the knee until your cast is off, or through the cast, but colder if you put in on knee, elevate elevate

I did 2 things. The 1st was I kept my foot elevated above my heart on a childrens bean bag I bought at Target. It was more comfortable than pillows because it formed around my cast better. The 2nd is I took arnica montana. I go to an natural food store and I dissolved 4-5 pellets under my tongue for about the 1st week. It was great because it has no side effects and the bruising on your foot disappears quickly.

donna.. what exactly is arnica montana? I've still got swelling.. moreso in my other foot now from putting all my weight on it.. and I've had issues with swelling in the past and already take a diuretic.. so now i'm interested in this.. I could probably just go look it up myself, but I'm too lazy. lol besides others might want to know too. =)

It is a homeopathic remedy for sore muscles and swelling. I go to a homeopathic specialist to help me choose the appropriate vitamins. When I told her I was was having surgery she recomended arnica montana. Homeopathic medicines are the active ingredients from herbs. They come in brown glass vials. They do not cause side effects like regular medication. They are sugary pellets tou dissolve under your tongue. I have heard that in England most people keep it in their medicine cabinets for bruises and sprains. I imagine that you can purchase it at a health food store.

i used arnica after i fell off my crutches early on in recovery....because the doc said i couldn't use NSAIDS (ibuprofen, etc). I fell and hurt my elbow very bad. so i thought i would try it. it does help (maybe) and it can't hurt so now if anything hurts i rub it on. i got the topical cream. not the pills.

Of course ice the foot as instructed if tht is still appropriate.
The main thing post op is to keep the foot elevated.
Depending on how serious the surgery was, swelling can last for a long time(months).
One goes to bed at night and the foot looks great in the morning.
One is up all day and the foot looks swollen.
Plus, if you are not on fluid restrictions for some health reason.........
I was just a nut about keeping my body well hydrated with water and fluids.
I think it is so important to have fluids flushing the body.
Decrease the incidence of blood clots, infections etc.

Hi Here in the UK we do use arnica lots both in tablet and cream form. It really is great for reducing swelling and bruising. I've also been told recently by a nutritionist friend that the herb comfrey is excellent for helping bones to knit - you can take it as a tea or there may be remedies in the health shops.

There are health issues with using Comfrey internally. See info on this website:
