On Friday my OB/GYN called me up to tell me that my pap test came back abnormal so she wants to do a colposcopy and I'm so scared it's going to hurt. I told her that I have bad anxiety problems and she said I won't be able to get knocked out or get numb for it then I told her that I may end up passing out which won't be good. Also, I may have a biopsy of my cervix and I'm so angry that I have to go through this crap as I have enough problems.
When she told me I couldn't stop crying, that's how bad I'm getting. She told me that it won't hurt I would just feel some discomfort and probably some crampling like I'm having a period. I'm so confused as so many women told me it won't hurt and I don't know what to believe. Also, my OB/GYN had to prescribe me Diazepam 2 mgs and I have to take 1 before the precedure and 4 ibprofins an hour before. I hope taking these different pills will help me and hopefully I can get a ride if not I have to drive myself which won't be good
I hope someone can help me with this I'm very scared and my precedure has to get done on Wednesday :mad::(:o

Hi, I understand your fears, but please don't be scared. I have high anxiety / panic, too. I had to have a colposcopy twice. From my experience, it does not hurt, it's just a little bit uncomfortable and annoying. What really helped me is to breathe slowly. To do this, inhale SLOWLY through your diaphragm to the count of 5 (to breathe through your diaphragm, your tummy will inflate out), then exhale slowly through your diaphragm to the count of 8 (your tummy will deflate in). If you concentrate on your breathing, it will calm you down and help take your mind off of what the doctor is doing. For any type of anxiety, this is what helps me. Also, when you breathe, it puts you in the moment, so you are not worrying about anything else but your breathing. Good luck! You are not alone. Other people have been there and have gone through it. You can, too.

i have also had 2 done. Im a huge wussie and also suffer from panic and anxiety. It was not bad at all. The most i felt was a pinch with the biopsy. My doc actually kept me talking though it so i had my mind occupied. I also get woozey after anything even blood drawing so i just brought some juice to drink to get my sugar back up and just took things slow after he was done with the getting dressed. Your gonna be fine dont worry. I even had my mom come with me :)

Hi Starrisa,
No I'm not alone about this precedure, I just done understand I had a normal pap test last July and I don't know why it changed to abnormal all I can say maybe my HPV has alot to do with it.
I have to get this done tomorrow morning at 10:30a.m and I have to take a Valium 2 hours before and 4 Advils an hour before. When I was in my mid 20's my pap test was abnormal then I had another one done within 6 months and I was normal. The nurse that did my pap test in England didn't do a colposcopy on me.
What happens if it comes back abnormal again? what other treatment will I have to have again? another colposcopy and I hope not.

hi there, my test came back showing hpv and bad cells. So what my doc did was a cryo freeze. Which is painless, you dont feel cold sensations. All i felt was pressure and mild cramping. When i had my repap done i still was abnormal so had to do it all over again. Now 3 years later i havent had an abnormal pap and which i dont understand i have been testing negitive for hpv now. I dont understand either how all of a sudden you can had a abnormal pap. I was in my early 20s when i had all this done. But dont worry you will be fine. I can home after my colposcopy and just slept for a couple hours. After that i was fine. I wish you luck and dont be afriad to ask your doc questions.

I also had an abnormal pap many years ago and I had the colposcopy with biopsy. It showed a lesion on my cervix, not cancer, just abnormal cells. I had laser surgery done and have had mostly normal paps ever since. (maybe 1 or 2 abnormal over 20 years and each time the next one was normal) This really is a very common procedure. And very rarely is there a serious problem. Very, very rarely.
The valium should help you relax, quite a bit. And as others have said it may just cause a bit of period-like cramps after. Or a tiny pinch for a second while the biopsy is taken.
I wouldn't worry about it, but you might want to hop in bed with a heating pad and take a few ibuprofen for the cramps after.
Best of luck. I'm sure you will be fine.

Hi CMP,
I went to my gynecologist today and I did get the colposcopy done with a biospy and it didn't hurt at all. My friend held my hand and my doctor and friend said that I was doing very well and I didn't cry at all. I did take 4 Advils and 2 Valiums and I was fine the whole time. I'm proud of myself that I did it

I'm glad it went well. Did your doc "walk" you through as it was being done or say anything about what he/she saw? Or when you should hear back? It sounds like your doc has a good bedside manner and truly cares about how his/her patients are feeling.
Take care and let us know when you hear anything, OK?

Hi CMPgirl,
My OB/GYN did walk me through it and I'm glad that I only had minor cramping no pain and no pinching. I didn't even bleed not even spot that much and I was told not to have sex for week and I'm fine.

Have you gotten your report back from the biopsy?

Hi Pickles,
No, I didn't get my results back from the biopsy and hopefully things will be fine I'm just worried as I've been through hell. Also, I have depression as well as anxiety and wished these things never happen. According to my OB/GYN she told me that my HPV isn't that bad this time, she said it can go away on it's own and I hope so.
I have a new boyfriend and I told him about my HPV and he knows about that stuff and he was so nice about it. He's divorced with 3 daughters and he was a gentle man as I did meet him at my laundry mat.
