In my opinion melatonin is somewhat over-rated as a sleep aid. I keep it on hand, and use it myself occasionally, but in my personal experience there are things that work much better for sleep. Try this combination, at bedtime: 500 mg Niacin (not niacinamide), 500 mg L-tryptophan (an amino acid), and a quality calcium supplement like Bio Calth (two to three tablets). This combination works like a dream for me, literally!

Gary's right...melatonin is highly overated as a sleep aid....check MedlinePlus, a government source of medicine and supplements.
Melatonin, administered for a variety of sleep problems, is rated by our government a "C" which means that there is unclear scientific evidence for this kind of use.
As far as dosage goes, melatonin is a supplement, and the FDA doesn't not strictly regulate herbs and supplements. so is no guarantee of strength, purity or safety of products, and effects may vary. Doses of 0.5-50 milligrams of melatonin taken nightly by mouth have been studied by researchers.
Side Effects and Warnings...There are lots and lots of these....fatigue, dizziness, headache, irritability, and sleepiness, disorientation, confusion, sleepwalking, vivid dreams, and nightmares;infection; difficulties with walking and balance; mood changes; psychotic symptoms; and the list goes on.
Given the iffy rating and the lenghthy list of side effects, I personally wouldn't risk taking this supplement for sleep problems.

It is awful not sleeping. I am having good luck with Lunesta but I have to take it a long time before I want to sleep. None of the sleeping pills work fast on me. Ambien worked but it gave me terrible stomach problems and I already have enough stomach problems. I, also, convinced my Doctor to give me .5 Xanax but it really gives me such vivid dreams that I am worn out when I wake up and don't feel rested. If I take .25 a while before bed I can sleep and then if I wake up and can't go back to sleep I take another and that seems to work better but the Lunesta works well for me. Another thing I have found and I have no idea why this works for me is to wear a sleep mask and I sleep more soundly and don't wake up as often. My room is dark so I don't know why this works. I think it is psychological. I started wearing this when my husband died suddenly and I wanted to escape from my thoughts and it seemed to work then. Lately I started it again and it seems to be working which tells me that most of this is psychological. My other suggestion is Klonopin rather than the Xanax as they say that works better for sleep and is less addictive.
