StillWorried

At 5 weeks after possible exposal, I ordered PCR/ELISA test. Both result come back negative. I called CDC and asked about the possible false negative, they told me it is possible have both false negative. I am very nervous about it. still worried about HIV infection. What is the reliability of PCR/ELISA test at 5 weeks.

Thanks

The reason they told you a false negative was possible was that you are not waiting the requested 90 day time frame. although most people show antibodies by 30-60 days or so. You do need to retest again at the 60 day mark at least to make sure. Just do an antibody I don't know if spending the $$$ on PCR is worth it since an antibody is extremely accurate if you allow sufficient time.
