Hi All,

I thank you in advance for any information that anyone can give me. About 4 hours ago I had my first appointment with my PM and first trigger point injection in my stomach. They said it should numb everything and that by the time I lelt the office I should be feeling much better.. Well, I lelt there in more pain then when I went there... Now... My stomach is in so much pain I am scared. They told me their were risks but it doesn't sound like I should be dealing with this.

I of course called their office back about and hour and a half ago and still have not gotten a call back from my PM... ANy thoughts.. On the discharge papers it said if you get sever stomach pains for to the ER but I don't want to be dramatic and rush in if nothing is truly wrong.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I have had several trigger point injections and they did not cause additional pain like you are having. I can totally appreciate your not wanting to be dramatic, but I don't think you are supposed to be in more pain after the injection. Do you know what they injected?

Thank you for your response! I appreciate it.

They injected a steriod called Decadron for inflamation and then some sort of numbing agent to take away this sever pain I have been having. They also gave me lidoderm patches to apply on the outside. I feel miserable. They told me there was no way they ruptured the stomach lining but a possibility of puncturing a blood vessel. So they told me to just deal with it with my pain meds i have at home. They are not even close to cutting it and they want me to start weening off of them.. Which I am all for ( i feel like i have been on them long enough and a different solution would be best) if they can get this pain to go away but they can't expect me to get off those meds (perc) 5/325 if I am in more pain then when I went in. So they pretty much told me to deal with it and call in the morning. SO I called this morning and told them that my pain dropped from a 9 last night to about an 8 today and they said that was great! GREAT? I barely slept last night.. I was vomitting, restless... in pain... and still have to go to work today. SO I called my refering dr. because I feel like they treated me like just a number and I was more confused and in more pain then when I went in there....

I am so frusterated and emotional at this point I don't even know what to do with myself. My referring dr. told me they would start checking my organs there and he thinks it may be bowel related.. The PM completely ingorned all of that and pretty much said some other dr's just don't know what they are talking about and now he thinks I have nerve damage?? SO he is putting me on neurontin, lidodern patches and nortriptaline which is used for depression but he is using it for nerve damage and to help me sleep. Then I have to go to warm pool therapy 40 miles from my home one way and wants me to do the tens until in physical therapy. My husband and I were pretty much told that it is their way or the high way and if I was not commited enough to make sacrafices like taking days off of work unpaid that I was not committed enough about feeling better. I am so much more confused and frusterated than when I went in there.. I am scared and feel so helpless at this point.

If anyone has any advice please let me know... I would REALLY apreaciate it. Sounds like their are a lot of EXTREMELY knowledgable people in this board.

Thanks again for your reply.

Usually trigger points are lidocane only. If they used a steroid that can cause the injection site to become much more painful for several days. Some people have a worse reaction than others, about 10% get a pretty bad reaction, I'm one of them and it sounds like you are too. Get some ice on the injection site(s) as soon as you can. Ice will help more than anything else at this point. It helps with the pain, reduces inflammation, and helps counteract the reaction to the cortisone. I think I would go back to the referring dr (your pcp?), and explain how you were treated. PT might be helpful depending on what your pcp decides, but surely there is somewhere you can go that is closer. I'm guessing that you have abdominal/stomach pain? I'm not sure water therapy would be all that useful for that. If you absolutely have to go to work today (and it sounds like you do, totally understand that one) take an ice pack, container of ice if it's not available where you work and take it as easy as you can. The Lidoderm can be really helpful for this too.

Could you let us know a bit more about what the original pain condition was? There are a lot of really knowledgeable people here and someone may have some ideas of something else that would help.

Tigg.

Did they do a nerve block??? I ask because it was my understanding that with trigger points the needle is very small and is more of a surface shot.

I personally had a problem with a nerve block that caused very intense pain and sounds similiar to what you are going thru.

When you have an injection, I have been told, that sometimes the needle can come to close to the mylein sheath and it can cause SEVERE pain and it can take months/years to heal. :( I pray this is not your case. If this happened you will probably need stronger pain meds and you will be on them for sometime until the nerve calms down.

I pray that this is not your case. If you have any questions, I will be glad to answer them.

I am sorry you are in this kind of pain. I went for ESIs & injection in the ribs wed. This was my second set of ESIs & did pretty well with the first set.
I am having some increased pain to in the ribs & its going into the back. I cant figure out if that is from the rib injeciton. I feel kind of stupid but I am not sure what kind of injection he did in the ribs & will ask at my follow up. The nurse did call the next day & said its normal to have pain at the injection site, which I did ice & still am, but like you I am in more pain. If it gets worse for you I would go in. I could kick my self for not calling the office yesturday which was friday, but honestly thought it would not get worse. If it is still like this monday I am callling. I have heard sometimes certain injections can make it worse before it gets better. I am not sure if that is the case with you or me. I am asking my PM what he used & what type of injection & am writing down what they used in yours, just out of being curious.
I am abit fearful that I am worse & wanted you to know you are not alone. I hope everything is ok with you but sounds like you may have additional problems & you should not wait to long if this does not improve. Good luck, Sammy

Thank you all so much for your replies. It feels good to not feel alone. Lately I have been feeling pretty alone in this process.

I hope you all feel better too.. Sounds like everyone here has their plates full and I wish you all the best.

The pain is still worse than before I had the injections! Tonight I go for my first acupuncture session.. I am kind of scared but I need some pain relief! They changed my meds to Oxycontin 10mg with Perc for BT. So far the Oxycontin has given me constant head aches.. Not sure what to think about that but it is helping some with the pain??? I don't know. I feel very confused.

Everyone hang in there! Thanks again!
