Hi,
I have chronic back pain, sciatica, pinched nerves in neck/shoulder area and severe tailbone pain from breaking it 3 times in last 5 years. I have been treated by my pcp but she now says she wants me off meds and put me on a taper to end them. She says I am too young to be in this much pain. I am 24, and have 2 children and another on the way. I cant help it that I am in pain. She makes me feel like I am a friggin druggie because I literally have to cry to make her understand how bad it hurts. What can or should I do? I am very uncomfortable talking to her about how she makes me feel, or asking her to continue meds. I am becoming seriously depressed over this. Someone please help me:(

I am not sure what is available in the manner of xrays, i have yet to have an mri. She has basically been prescribing me meds and physical therapy and not ordering any tests to be done to actually find out what the problem(s) is(are). I am 27 weeks pregnant right now and unfortunately mri is out of the question. Do I need a referral for pm? I called and scheduled an appt w/ my pcp for tuesday to ask about it. I have lots of courage right now seeing as I am in LOTS of pain, I just feel like when I get there and she says "oh, you are too young to be in this much pain", I'm gonna back down and not say "HEY, I have the pain, so don't tell me I'm too young, instead, let's figure out how to treat it!" Any advice?????

Hi there~
Congrats on your new addition!
Im so sad you have to have a doctor who makes you feel this way. Its just so unfair, and on top of it all, you are a good mom, im sure, and having another addition on the way certainly is a joy, but Im sure you feel horrible.
There is another member who has posted about usiing narcotics while pregnant, maybe you can read her posts and see if she has any help for you.
I certainly know that there are docs out there that will help you, and even if you have to pay cash if you are in an insurance situation that only allows certain docs, it would be worth it.
I wish someone else would chime in here, because Im sure there are docs who treat pts who are pregnant AND young, and maybe someone will give you a name.
Dont give up. You will find someone to help you. Trust me. There ARE good docs out there, but finding them CAN be tricky. I found mine in teeny little office, humble little victorian house, and he is an intagretive doc. He does eastern, and western med, I had been thru the ringer with all of the "big time" docs, and went for a massage, and met him, and hes amazing.
Hes moved now to a way bigger practice where they are a LOT stricter concering CP patients, but still Im not under contract, and he takes very good care of me. I know if I had anyone elses' doc here they probably wouldnt be as liberal at all.
This should be a happy time for you, and you dont need to be stressed out more than you are. I know you know that, but I just know you'll find someone compassionate. Youll be in my thoughts and prayers along with everyone else here. Please keep posting~

First of all, I am soooo sorry you are going through all of this. I want to share my story with you so that it might give you some hope.
Two months after I gave birth to my son, I started having back problems. I was not as young as you, but I was "only"31. I was given the run around that all new moms have bad backs and was put into physical therapy. Then when my son was 9 months, I became pregnant again. Very early into the pregnancy my lower back was hurting. Then at about 13 weeks the pain started radiating down my buttock and right leg. Again, was given the run around saying it was sciatic pain from the pregnancy. Then when I was 18 weeks pregnant, I was in sooo much pain that I could not even sleep. I was crying in agony all day long. I could not care for my son. My OB sent me to an Orthopedic Surgeon who gave me vicodin for my pain and ordered an MRI. Yes, I had am MRI while I was 19 weeks pregnant. It showed I had a large herniated disc at L5-S1. It was Christmas Eve and the Ortho sent me straight to the Emergency Room to have surgery the next day. YES....I had a microdiscetomy when I was 19 weeks pregnant. I was put on a morphine pump for pain and was put under general anesthesia. All of this was done with the guidance of my OB. They told me the baby was developed enough, but I wasn't too far along to worry about pre-term labor. The night of the surgery, I walked out of hte hospital completely pain free. I went on to deliver a healthy full term baby girl.
Unfortunately, I have really bad discs and my disc herniated again a year later, but I was relatively pain free for that year. I truely believe having surgery while I was pregnant was the only thing I could have done for myself, my son, and my baby.
If you have ANY questions, please feel free to ask. I know how scarey it is to be pregnant, have little ones to take care of and be in so much pain.

Hi there. As a spinney who has had 4 lumbar surgeries, I want you to know my heart goes out to you and your little ones and I pray that you can find some relief soon. Dealing with pain during your pregnancy is not good for you and your baby.
As for your doctor is she treating your pain with meds? I see where others have suggested it but what is she doing for you now?
Has she ordered xrays even?
I want to stress that anyone can develop back pain at any age. I had my first surgery at 17. As a teen, I complained about my back and was told you are okay until one day I stepped out of bed and went straight to the floor. To make a long story short, I ended up having my first back surgery done within 48 hours and it was a fusion. I am telling you this not to scare you but to just say that back pain can happen to anyone and age has nothing to do with it. PRAISE GOD I was fine until 20 - 23 years later.
I really believe you need to have an examination done by a spinal surgeon and depending on what they deem necessary an MRI can be ordered to find out the cause of your pain and they can go from there.
Is your OB being supportive? What are they recommending you do?
I am praying for you and your little one. I imagine it must be very hard on you. Please keep us posted and I want you to know that I care and am here frequently on the board so yell if you need anything.

No, my OB is not supportve. They pretty much say they are not comfortable giving me any more pain meds. Same with my GP. I really think I need to see a PM? They are specialists in pain and would maybe feel more comfortable helping me maintain a LOW pain level? Ican barely function. I am no longer going for walks to the park, no longer going to the store, sending my hubby instead, I either sleep on the uncomfortable couch or cry my way up and down the stairs to my bed. I am so depressed and angry and tired of feeling like this. I don't know how much longer I can deal. I have2 children to take care of and they just dont understand why mommy "doesnt feel good" all the time. Please, any advice or support would help!

Thank you for caring! I feel so alone inthis. I hate complaining but it hurts sooooo bad. My hubby is getting sick of hearing it, my boys don't understand why I'm "grumpy and don't feel good" And my Dr just doest seem to care. She just thinks im too young to be in this much pain and how the heck does she knowhow I feel?!?! Gosh I am so sick of feeling like this. I just don't know what to do. Thankyou ad everyone else for the support and help you have provided to me. I really do appreciate it!

(((Hugs))) I do understand I have to children and they are older but it affects them so much.
I don't know if this would help you but there are high risk/complicated pregnancy doctors -- not to say that you have a high risk - but I suspect they would also be more educated in working with these type of issues. Just an idea - might be worth a call.
Check out this thread:

I hope this can help you some. Good luck and you are in my prayers.
