View Full Version : deafness 5 years after stapedectomy

Hello,
I had stapedectomy surgery in my right ear in Oct 2003. Three weeks ago, I suddenly went deaf in that same ear. For 10 days my doctor/surgeon put me on Cortisone, with no changes. I had a CT Scan, but it showed that the prosthetic has not moved. The doctor wants me to wait another month, have another hearing test then see her again. Do the prosthetics ever malfunction? What else could cause such a sudden and complete hearing loss? I can't come to terms with fact that I might be permanently deaf. Very loud noises will cause a kind of vibrating-shock sensation in my ear. There is also a weird sound when taking a shower and the water is hitting the inside of the ear. What could that be?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi

I am sorry I don't have any answers as I just had my stapedectomy last week, really hoping it goes ok in the long run as that is the whole idea..right!
I just wanted to offer my sympathies and hope that this is just a temporary thing for you. I know it is probably impossible NOT to stress over it. Are you having any tinnitus issues with the deafness?
I have my follow up apt today I will ask my surgeon what could happen. I will post later.

take care

Thank you for your reply. I'm sure your recovery will go without a hitch. The success rate is very high for this kind of surgery. It looks like my problem involves nerve hearing loss now, rather than the bone hearing loss, which stapedectomy surgery addresses. I'm still holding out hope that I can be helped with perhaps cochlear implants. I have some doctor visits coming up in the near future.
good luck to you!

Hi there
I finally go the packing out the suction was like a jet plane in my ear! I can hear but have some echoing....also my tounge is pretty numb, apparently this should all settle down in time (!)
I did ask about your situation but he obviously couldn't really say anything much....drs go figure!
I know someone who has has a number of major ear surgeries including a plastic eardrum, the first one in Canada. So I am hoping you can find a solution that you can live with :)
Do you have hearing loss in both ears? I only have hearing loss in the ear I had surgery on, other one seems fine for now.
I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming appointments, I will check back one the board later.
Best wishes

Thanks for your kind words and thank you fro taking the time to talk to your doctor for me. I only have hearing loss (bone and nerve) in my right ear. The tinnitus, since going completely deaf is not quite as bad, and there is less pain. When there is loud noises there's static.
The symptoms you described will go away shortly. Your hearing will get better and better over time. It took me about a month until it was to the level it was going to be at.
Good luck to your continued positve outcome.

That's good news. You are lucky, I was dizzy for about a month. Regarding the kids, think of the alternative, not hearing them.
Thanks again for your concern. I had another hearing test the other day, no changes. I don't have my second opinion appt till next month, so it's just a waiting game.
Take care!

Hi Trecia11

Just checking in to see how things are going. Did you have your 2nd opinion appt yet? HOw did it go?

Well thankfully the dizzies have gone...they were nasty..I still have a funky tounge but it has gone from numb to mettalic taste so I am hoping that means it should be better soon, the main delight is that the tinnitus has lessened sooooo nice not to hear that horrible noise for a while at least...I couldn;t believe it ..silience sure is golden.
Well I thought I would get online as both kids a re asleep and its only 7.30pm ....

Take care :)

Hello,
I go for my 2nd opinion on the 23rd. I met with my surgeon and one of the suggestions she made was the Baha, she didn't reccommend it though. I said NO THANKS. the Baha is a screw that they insert in your skull that sticks out and then you snap a device on the outside of it. This time a year you could get away with it though, for Halloween I could be Frankenstein. Another suggestion is the Bicros hearing aids. I'm going to look further into those and see if my insurance would cover them. I would only get them if I could get the wireless kind.
It sounds like you are well on the road to recovery. That's good!
Take care!

Trecia, I have otoscleroisis but just recently had more hearing loss unrelated to that. It is sensory/nerve loss. They tried prednisone for 14 days with no results. They have no clue what has caused it. Do you have any other symptoms? ear sensitvity, tinnutus, ear fullness like your head is going to pop?

Reply to Sallyndh: I had all those symptoms and tried Prednisone for 10 days, all it did was drive me crazy with lack of sleep. As for the symtoms almost all of them have gone away. If there is a really loud noise it hurts my ear, and I still have static noises in ear when anything loud gets near it. I also have been diagnosed with sensory/nerve loss. My Dr. said maybe in the fture I will be a candidate for some kind of choclear implant, but for now I just have to accept I'm deaf in that ear. Good luck to you.
