Hi, I was on statins and went off them when I experienced pains and aches which were horrible. I told my doctor...no more statins and he put me on the generic of Questran, a drink I mixed and had before lunch and dinner. Well Thursday we got our new blood work numbers and they stink.

I started 600 mg of Nature's Plus extended release Red Yeast Rice last night at bedtime. I also take CEQ10 in the morning. Should I be taking this at bedtime also? Also taking fish oil 3 x a day. The following are my past and present numbers. I am a 72 year old woman.

4/25/08
TC 294
HDL 67
LDL 198
TR 143

8/7/08
TC 286
HDL 75
LDL 178
TRI 167

Appreciate any advice...thanks.
Janice

From what I have read, statins are not very effective in older women. Red yeast rice is also a statin, so you may have side effects from it too. Have you been taking fish oil for a while? Cutting back on carbs would help. Your ratio of LDL/HDL is actually pretty good. Your LDL is high but your HDL is excellent.

Laura both hubby and I are following a low carb diet. Have upped our fish oil to 3 a day for about 3 months.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Hi Jan.

First, let me say that for a woman of 72, your figures are very very good.
Your LDL/HDL ratio is only 2.37 and the TC/HDL is 3.81. There are members of this board who are many many years younger, that would love to have as low a ratio reading.

Now, when you say past figures, were those first figures taken prior to the intake of the statins?

Have you currently any heart or blood circulation problems?
If you have, then for a woman of your age you really should be on 300mg of COq10 a day. ( 3 x 100mg spread through the day with meals.)
If no heart problems then with RYR, take 200mg (1 x morning, 1 x evening with meals.)
Even if not taking RYR, nor have heart problems, then take 1 x 100mg COq10, as everyone over fifty should be doing.

Don't waste your money on cheap supermarket COq10 capsules, unless they are 100% Kaneka Q10 based products. In other words, they won't provide the body with the protection that has been proved over and over to work in Japan.

Fish oil: Ensure that the daily total EPA is equal to or greater than (=>) 600mg, and the DHA is =>400mg.

Jan, the RYR capsule....take with your evening meal/snack/supper, not on it's own with water. If you start to suffer from thigh/calf pains, then stop the RYR immediately, but continue with the oil and q10.

As far as I can see, if you have no heart problems now, you really just need to get your 'trig' fats down and the EPA+DHA (min. of 1000mg per day) will do that for you.

Good luck.

Taffyboyo.

Taffy: Thanks so much for your response. I value your input. The first figures I listed were off the statins and then started Questran, which did nothing so far, as the second figures indicate.

I do not have any heart problems, just some high blood pressure and hypothyroid for which I take meds.

I just bought the Nature's Plus extended release RYR, 600 mg. and thought just one in the evening would do the trick. When I take it with dinner, do I also take the COEZQ10 at the same time? I have been taking that in the a.m. with my meds and vitamins.

I thought I would continue with the Questran since I have a lot of it (got 90 days supply with lots still left over). I can't take any drugs for 4 hours after the Questran so that is why I took the RYR at bedtime. What do you think I should do? Since the Questran did nothing, maybe I should just stop it altogether.

Lots of questions, I know.

Can the 600 mg extended release tablet be split in half in order to take 300 mg twice a day?

Hi Jan

I'll answer your last post prior to the above first. Don't break the RYR in half. The coated extended release version, as it's name suggests slowly dissolves within the body to act after passing the stomach and not before or within.
The 1 x 600mg taken in the evening with food, will work on the liver throughout the night when cholesterol is being manufactured by the body.

No problem taking the Coq10 in the evening if only taking one capsule per day. No set time for taking Coq10, as long as it is taken with a meal.

Jan, I am not a doctor so cannot advise on the continuing use of Questran, so you should seek your doctor's advise.
However, there appears to be no interactions with Statin type drugs, but plenty of side effects after short and long term use. For info: The only main action on cholesterol of Questran that I can find is for the reduction of LDL.

PS: One side effect of Questran: may interfere with normal fat digestion and absorption and so,
may prevent absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K. So, with you taking vitamin supplements, you may as well be eating paper whilst on Questran.

Taffy, once again thanks. I will take the Questran only with lunch and the RYR and COEQ10 with dinner.

Today is the third day I went on the RYR and guess what?......My legs are starting to ache so that is the end of that. I guess I will continue with the Questran and see what happens. Thanks for all your help.
