Doctors usually put the mother on medicine i.e. valtrex. If an outbreak is occurring at the time of delivery, a c-section is performed. Search this posts for "pregnancy", there are plenty here who have had normal deliveries even though they have herpes.

I didn't know that Valtrex was safe for pg women. c-section is always an option for making sure at the last minute.

Yep it is perfectly safe according to the studies. Friend of mine, his wife's doctor automatically put her on it for the last month or so. As preventative in case she was exposed during last trimester.

I also confirmed with my gyno that if I became pregnant that I can continue with my Acyclovir throughout my pregnancy...it's safer than being on bloodpressure or even cholesterol meds so he said. And he highly recommended C-section just to be on the safe side.

i just looked it up and it said that there were no long term studies and that the drug could be passed through the breast milk and may harm the baby when born. you can read it also. just type the question in read the answer just to e safe

My gyno informed me of that as well. C-section to prevent passing the virus on to the baby and do not breastfeed as the meds can be passed through to the baby. I was already told that I'd have to have a c-section anyway and I wasn't planning on breastfeeding b/c I'll be going back to work immediately. I'm sure I'll get a lecture on that from my mother, but I haven't and done plan to tell her I have Type 1 either.

I had a normal pregnancy. Outbreaks very sporadic. I did have an outbreak during my pregnancy, but no where near birth. I was told that IF I had an outbreak close to birth -- measures would be taken -- C-section, etc. But I was fine, baby was fine!
