I am a 54 year old female. I have chronic strep and after months of antibiotics the test is still positive. I have been told I need a tonsillectomy and am scared to death. I had my spleen removed 3 years ago due to extreme bleeding during my 2nd hiatal hernia surgery. Should I be concerned about having this surgery or would you also recommend it.
Thanks for your help!

Ask your doctor about the risks of bleeding. THEre is a chance of bleeding as scabs fall off during recovery. Good luck.
p.s. tonsillectomy is a serious operation. Be sure you need it.

To be honest with you I would never recommend a tonsillectomy to anyone unless they needed it urgently just due to the experience I had-very very bad. I am not sure just how much I bled during the surgery as I was knocked out but I do remember throwing up a lot of blood after the surgery. After that, even though I was in extreme pain and I could not talk for two weeks, I do not remember any bleeding. I would talk to your doctor and make sure that this surgery is going to be right for you-while it is a routine procedure and a surgery that is performed daily, some people such as yourself have other factors that make it more of a serious, less than routine surgery. Good luck to you.
