Thank you all for sharing your stories about otosclorosis and surgery. They have really helped us. I have been agonizing over whether or not to let my daughter have surgery now or wait and we have decided to have it first of October with Dr. Owens in Dallas.
She says that she "hear" things that aren't there and that her ears will sound "crunchy" and sometimes really hurt. Is this a common symptom of this? I haven't read anything similiar to this and was wondering if some of you had had these experiences with this disease.
I guess I am glad that we have found this while she is young so I don't have to worry about her worrying about it. She isn't the least bit worried and is really excited about having bionic ears. If its okay, I will post her results and recovery on here for others to view as well.

Good luck to your daughter! Let us know how she does.
It sounds like your daughter is describing tinnitus, with hearing things that are not there. I experienced sharp pain in my ears (now only one ear) which i guess was related to the otosclerosis.

Dr. Owens did my surgery, and it went great! He was recommended to me by my ENT, who interned under him or something - she said he has the best hands in the business! Well, I am 100% satisfied - and I am getting my other ear done just a couple of weeks after your daughter!:) My tinnitis disappeared, which I didn't expect, and my hearing is amazing! It is the greatest gift! I am excited to get the other ear done and be a "normal" person again! Hearing disabilities can be very isolating socially, so good for you for doing this for your daughter. It will make a world of difference to her. Being 13 is hard enough, I can't imagine it with hearing problems! (My otosclerosis came after having 3 kids!)
Good luck, and hope all goes well - just give it time afterwards. It takes a while to really hear normally!

Shari, I had read some of your earlier posts and realized that you were in Allen. I've been following your progress since your surgery and you have given me and my daughter alot of encouragement. Thank you for taking the time to post your experiences. Your positive experiences have helped us go from being terrified to being excited about getting this behind her.
My first opinion of Dr. Bob wasn't a good one so I am so relieved to know that you are happy with him. Her surgery is Oct 9 and I will post regarding her experiences.
Thanks again.

Thanks for your kind words! I am looking forward to hearing about your daughter's surgery! Dr. Bob is not the warmest fuzzy out there, but that is not an indicator of ability. You want different qualities in a surgeon than you do in a kindergarten teacher, after all. He was recommended so highly - by an ENT who could technically perform the surgery, but wanted me to have the highest success rate -and he does these a lot. Which was something mentioned on this board a lot.
A tip for post-op appointments: have your questions written down and make sure you ask him. He was very helpful and answered all my questions, but I had to ask them.
Good luck to your daughter!:)
