I was diagnosed with a 4.5mm kidney stone in my ureter 6 days ago when I went to the ER with much pain, nausea, vomiting. I still have the pain which is controlled most of the time with Advil. Sometimes, there is no control.
I have not been pain free in those 6 days. What can I expect?
1. Do I have pain until the stone passes?
2. How long does that take?
3. Is there any way to reduce the pain until it passes?
4. Most importantly, has anyone had a stone this size pass.
I hope that you can help because this is getting frustrating.
Thank You.

The pain that you feel is the stone moving from the kidney down the uterer. Once it makes it to your bladder, the pain disappears and you should be able to pass it. Usually, though not always, you will feel the stone exit.
If you are still feeling the same pain, the stone may still be in your uterer and did not make it into the bladder. I had a 5mm stone over a month ago and the MRI revealed that it was at the end of the uterer and may have passed into the bladder since I was not feeling any more pain. I was told to go for a follow-up x-ray to make sure it had passed. Otherwise, my kidney could shut down. I was told that a 5mm stone is small enough to pass on its own.
I followed up with my doctor and had an x-ray. Weeks went by and I did not get a call and I kept forgetting to call back. A month later, I had a painful attack and ended up in ER once more. The MRI revealed that the same stone had grown to 7mm and there was no way it would be able to pass on its own. I had surgery the next morning to remove the stone.
Thank goodness my kidney was ok. Make sure you get a follow up x-ray to make sure the stone is gone or confirm it is still in there. They may prescribe medication to break down the stone or worse case scenario, go in and remove it if it had grown. The surgery is relatively mild and you are released the same day with minimal discomfort. It is no big deal so do not worry too much about that possibility.
Do not let it go since stones are so painful to endure. Good luck.

Thank you. I still have pain off and on. It is still controlled with Advil. I hope that it is not growing like your stone did.
You were very reassuring to me.

You are very welcome. It would benefit you to have a follow up x-ray to make sure there is no obstruction. It is an inconvenience but take care of your kidneys, you can't replace them. I will check up on you! ;)

I don't know how much this will help but, I was only 17 when I had my first kidney stone. I can tell you that yes you will have the pain until the stone is passed. The pain comes and goes. For me, I had the same symptoms and it took me awhile to pass the stone (about 4 - 6 months). Not saying that you will have the stone for that long, everyone is different and it all varies on how much water you drink a day. The more you urinate the better.

Again, thank you for your time to answer my concerns. I have passed 2 small stones so I guess that the big one is breaking up. I hope that I am on the right course here.

That is good news. Yay! Do you know if you had more than one stone? I am hoping the small pieces are from the stone that they saw. Keep drinking a lot of water to flush them out.;)

It is good news. I had one 4.5 mm stone and several smaller ones behind that. I am hoping that the big one broke up. I don't see how the smaller ones got past the big one. It was giving me soooo much pain and now I am pain free.
What a relief.
Thank you again for your support. I needed it!!!

Would it be in bad taste to say "you rock!" I know, bad joke from one kidney stone victim to another. ;)
This website is wonderful. It is nice to have a way to be able to support one another. I am glad you found comfort here. It is therapeutic to be able to talk to nice people, such as yourself. Take care!
