I am aware of protein in the urine since January. Lots of protein. I am now using the Albustix dip sticks at home and I'm showing 100 mostly and sometimes 300. It never falls below this amount.

I saw the Nephrologist for the second time a couple of weeks ago and he said my tests are OK and to keep blood pressure and diabetes under control (which they are) and to see him again in a year.

Today I picked up my test results and it's showing eGFR at 54. He said all my tests came back OK and they did except for the protein and the eGFR.

I just want to make sure this is something that does not need to be followed more closely. Does waiting a year to be rechecked sound reasonable?

so,he is assuming this is just from your diabetes or have you actually had any other testing such as an ultrasound or CT to just get that more in depth look at your kidneys? every six months is when i usually have my labs done on my kidneys and my liver,i have PKD which affects both organs. i also obtain an ultrasound on the kidneys and liver just to check on cystic formations and to also check the bloodflow thru all the right structures(they use the doppler for this) to make certain things are just flowing as they should be. how has your creatinine been?

no matter when they test my urine,i always always have protien and also blood in mine. my cysts break from time to time and bleed some so its kind of always there. have you been diagnosed with some specific type of kidney condition or disease? if you have never actually had an ultrasound done since the protien started showing up,you really need to just to see what is going on. trust me when i say,you cannot just rely upon labs only in order to really see how the kidneys are. my labs have been within all the norms but my ultrasounds look like hell and show kidneys that are very highly cystic and also over four times their normal size. this is just what PKD(my condition) does to kidneys and in my case also the liver. you just need that little looksee in order to really know overall just how the kidneys are. you may have already had at least an ultrasound done but just did not mention it,but if you haven't,you really do just need that done.

that US just really gives the best look and overall picture of kidney function, combined with the labs of course. Marcia
