how long have they been testing for hpv in pap tests?

My doctor began offering HPV testing along with the pap about a year ago. The test was approved by the FDA 4 years ago, I believe.

However, it's not generally offered to younger women, so just because you're having pap tests doesn't mean you're automatically being tested for HPV.

I recently changed gyno's due to the fact that my doctor was always booked: so i changed to male doctor figuring he'd be more readily available and sure enough I can book an appointement the same day with him.
Well anyway I went for a regular checkup and found out I have low risk hpv-
I was and still am devasted by the news.
So I called my old gyno and asked about my previous checkup in feb-they told me my pap smear was fine and therefore dont take an additional step foward to test for hpv.
My current doctor test for hpv low and high risk for all patients.
I was reading that they dont generally test for hpv-low or high risk for woman under 30-if the pap smear comes back normal- I think this is ridiculous.
Most dont do a low risk hpv test by the way-one is mostly diagnosed with symtoms of genital warts

Yes there is - but its not widely used for some mind boggling reason "its routine use is not recommended in medical guidelines or reimbursed by insurance"

Low Risk: Detected.
My doctor said you can even detect what strains one has but at this point it makes no difference knowing-I guess because there really isnt much one can do even if they know. In 6 months im going to get tested again and if its still in detected Im going to ask to know which strains I have(insurance typically wont cover this). Hopefully I'm one of the 70% who will have this cleared.
Really dont get the point of a just pap smear after reading all this information-most cervical cancer is caused from HPV-yet is usually missed through a typical pap smear. Seems that once a pap smear detects abnormalitiies its when its at the worst stage.
