I'm about to start chemo/radiation for colon cancer and learned (after asking LOTS of questions and getting evasive answers) that it will very likely cause ovarian failure and lead to premature menopause. I was still hoping to have more kids (I just turned 40 and have been trying for a few years). While trying to sort out my cancer treatment options, I've decided to undergo fertility treatment to retrieve and freeze my eggs. Luckily my cycle has worked out so that I can have IVF to banking my eggs without delaying my cancer treatment, but the radiation oncologist is concerend that my uterus won't recover. With all the possible negative outcomes of cancer, I feel like at least this one extra proceedure has a possible happy outcome. Am I crazy to do this when the chances are so slim that I'll 1) recover, 2) be able to carry a child? Does anyone know any examples of women who have had children after having radiation treatment in the pelvic area?
