Hi there,
I had a laparoscopic neph on 13th Aug, and I have so far gone 2 days without needing meds - and I had a complication which involved the surgeon having to dislocate my left hip, so I think thats pretty good! hang in there, it does get easier, I know this is hard but I had to push myself sometimes, I found that being as active as possible helped. Good luck!!

Hi - I have a friend who had a renal tumor removed two years ago along with most of one of his kidneys; and he still has soreness in the area. The doctor said that the pain was expected, since they had to cut through muscle to get to the kidney. His tumor was encapsulated. I remember that he took Percocet for quite a while after the operation. Even now the area which was operated on is sensitive.
This may be totally different from what you are referring to, but I hope it helps some. Mabent

I had my kidney removed at the beginning of July. I stopped taking pain med after 6 days and was driving by 10 days and pretty much back to myself by 3 weeks. My cut where they removed my kidney was about 3 inches. I still get sore and have learned to pace myself at work and play. I found going for small walks several times a day was very helpful, its a bit tough at first but does get easier, the main thing is to keep moving. I hope you are feeling better. Good Luck.

Every person's pain tolerance and recovery from surgery is different. I donated a kidney 4 years ago, and from what I recall, the really serious pain lasted for me for about 2 weeks. Worse than the pain was how long it took my body to recover from anesthesia. I found myself needing naps for a couple of months.

Hi,
I had my right kidney removed on 9/23/08. (one week ago) I only spent one night in the hospitol! I was glad I read "Greens" posts before surgery, he talks about walking and I believe this has really helped speed my recovery. The first three nights I had to take pain pills during the night, after that I sleep all night and I have only 2 pain meds a day. I have three weeks off work. With the speed my recovery is going I know I could go back sooner, I feel preaty good. I suffered from flank pain for about ten years and this pain is not much different I actuly feel silly taking a pain pill. This surgery was way easier than I expected!

I got my kidney taken out August 5th through laproscopic nephrectomy. I still have pain there especially when I'm active or if I sleep for a long time because of laying down.
I also seem to have something wrong with my good kidney now. That one is hurting now too.
Apparently it depends on the person. I wish I were one of the lucky ones.
