I have a appointment next week with a kidney specialist. I have never had any problems with my kidneys. My legs are swollen with fluid, joint pain, and fatigue. Are there medications that help the symptoms and slow down the kidney disease?

I have had kidney disease now for 2 years, I have 45% use. my kidneys aren't allowing me to produce/assemilate vit D. So I take a percription vit D.
I am on no special diet at this time.

Thank you for your reply. Did you have a kidney biopsy when the dr first diagnosed your kidney disease? My prayers are with you. Nadine:)

I have kidney disease. My symptoms were fatigue and loss of appetite - nothing else. My kidneys were failing at the time, but they reversed a lot of the damage with prednisone (a steroid). I took it for a month, plus got injections of Epogen (a hormone depleted by kidney failure) and iron transfusions, about 5 of them, once a week. I also had one blood transfusion. They determined my condition with blood tests, a kidney biopsy, and an ultrasound. Kidney disease can also cause fluid retention, especially in your ankles.
I am functioning now, with a 51 GFR (stage 3) with normal iron levels and an 8-5 job (I wasn't sure I would ever again). I have to take Vitamin D supplements, but a lot of people do. I hope you are seeing a good nephrologist.
Kidney disease is caused by many things. Mine was caused by an allergy to ibuprofen, so staying away from ibuprofen and other NSAIDs (like aspirin and Aleve) keeps me well. Tylenol is my painkiller now. Other causes are diabetes and inherited kidney problems. Good luck! Whatever happens, you should be feeling better soon.
About Vitamin D: When my Vit. D levels were lower, I had muscle pain and weakness. When they came up a bit, I had less of it. I'm still working on bringing up the levels - it's a long process.

Thank you so much for the information. I am going to an excellent kidney specialist. He told me I have mild kidney failure. He isn't sure what is causing the problems. I am having a kidney ultrasound next Thursday and blood work. I take Cellebrex for arthritis pain. He told me to only take it once in awhile instead of twice a day. I see the doctor again in four weeks.
I'll update soon. Take care.

Hi there,
Hope all goes well in your appointment next week. Celebrex is a member of the anti-inflammatories known as the COX-2 inhibitors. They are in the group of drugs known as "Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories" or NSAIDs. Old NSAIDs (like aspirin, naproxen, diclofenac) are notorious for causing stomach and intestinal ulcers. The new generation COX-2 inhibitors (like celebrex and vioxx) were promising because they still had the same (if not more) pain control, but hardly ever caused ulcers; HOWEVER (and a big however), all NSAIDs are known to be able to cause reversible impairment of kidney function. The COX-2 inhibitors, though much less harmful to the stomach, still have the same potential of causing kidney impairment. That is why they have told you to cut down on the celebrex.
It's important for them to check for other potential causes for renal failure, and will probably do a bunch of urine and blood tests when you're seen.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have arthritis and I really need the Cellebrex but it's not worth the kidney damage. The kidney dr. ordered blood tests, urine tests, and a kidney ultrasound. He said it is possible I have a kidney stone or something clogging my kidneys.Take care.
Sincerely Nadine

I had a kidney ultrasound on Thursday. The right side didn't hurt at all but the left side hurt during the test. How long does it usually take to get back the results from a kidney ultrasound? Thank you everyone for your prayers.

An Ultrasound can hurt? Did it hurt a lot? Due to inflammation or something like that? It's been decades since I had one, gyn.
Do any of us have diabetes damage to the kidneys? There are 4 stages. I'm at Stage 2, have an appointment w/ a nephrologist. The receptionist said he'll do an Ultrasound. You can't have potassium supplement for your leg cramps, which is really going to hurt. Anyone know any gentle exercises for prevention? I was drinking too much caffeine-free diet pop, which leaches out potassium, and plain water probably does too.
Thank goodness someone in another thread gave the information that there's a national renal diet. I'd been doing searches for kidney-safe foods, nonalcoholic drinks w/no sugar, meds. And btw, I'm into music too. Union member.
Good luck to everyone.

[SIZE="4"]Hi Nadine!!!
I just came from a renal ultrasound. She told me to give my dr. 24 hours and then I could call about it. But, she did say that if they found anything, they would call me.
I have been having swelling in my legs and been very tired. Just went to a Nephrologist last week. My creatine was up some (I am diabetic). They have taken urine samples and blood. Hopefully, I will know something this week!!!!!! It is very nerve wracking huh Nadine??????
Take care.

My kidney dr said that the reason the ultrasound hurt was because I had infection in my left kidney. I've been taking antibiotics and I am feeling better.

Glad you're getting better, and thanks for the information so we'll know what it could mean if our exams hurt. My first Nephrologist appointment isn't until December.
Eliminating my 4 am 2 cups of coffee, and decaf diet coke, steroids for my allergies and a little asthsma, POTASSIUM for my leg cramps, etc., my 50 years routine, is going to be really rough. You can't drink anything but water? Is milk harmful? I'm going to do a search about diabtetic claudification treatment, walked too much in a grocery store last night, and have already bookmarked the renal diet search results but haven't read all of that yet. Artificial sweetners for diabetics probably are harmful to the kidneys too. Did you go through all this? Proving it can be done?
Thanks again, Eagle

I hope you have gotten back your results from the kidney ultrasound and everything was ok. My prayers are with you. Take care and I hope you'll update.

The only orders the kidney dr gave me was to not take Cellebrex every day anymore but only a couple of times a week. Also I have to have blood and urine tests every four months and see him at the office. That way he can catch any problems early. I hope you are feeling better Eagle. Take care.
