Hey guys,

Along with many many other MS related symptoms, i was wondering if this one could possibly be one of them.

In the past 5 yrs, ive been having trouble with my left ear. Every single day at random, it pops and then i cant hear as well as i should be.
I have seen an ear specialist who was baffled and confused because he couldnt find anything wrong inside my ear.

Could this be a part of MS? I have not been diagnosed yet but all the peices are coming together.

Your thoughts would be great.

I've had problems with my right ear. Part of the reason I was referred to an ear, nose, throat doctor.

My right ear has a whole host of 'sensations'. Also, for some reason, when I dip my head under water, while the left ear keeps the water out, I can sometimes feel water entering my right ear further, sometimes it goes down my throat (or so it feels). My neuro and another lady I met in the hospital while I was on IV solumedrol for relapse confirmed that this is MS in my case.

I haven't had the ear popping yet, but I certainly get a fullness feeling in my right ear.

Nenu wow this could be MS related?

Strangly enough, the only relief i get when it closes up, is lower my head. This opens up my ear again but other than that, nothing works.

Do you think there could be a lesion blocking my hearing that moves away when i lower my head? i think the Doc did say there may be something there.

Well it probably wouldn't be a lesion. Lesions in MS are areas in the brain, optic nerve or spine where your immune system has mistakenly attacked the myelin covering, seeing it as a foreign invader in error, creating holes in the protective covering, thus the holes are lesions. They don't move from the area they begin, but new ones in those with MS can form at any time. Older lesions can too begin to fade.

As for the ear situation... have you looked into ear stones? What all did the ear specialist tell you? You could have a deep blockage that's moving around (goodness knows I did, had to have my ear syringed clean and the amount of wax that was removed was unreal).

Apparently i dont have a wax issue ( so they tell me ) and when i saw the nose, ear and throat doc, he was so confused as to what was happening.

Its not very reasurring when your specialist is confused and unsure of whats wrong with you.
So now ive just learnt to live with it, like its become a part of my day but its so annoying and uncomfortable. With whats happening to my body right now, im just assuming this ear thing could be related.

Hi Ellekay, I have problems with my ears as well. They feel full like they want to pop but they don't. I also have a constant high pitch buzzing in both. My ENT can not find any issues. The buzzing also gets louder when I have my "attacks", (dizziness and tingling on right side of my body). So far no firm dx except Probable MS. I am also being checked for Antiphospholid Syndrome which is a blood auto immune disease. Do you have buzzing along with your symptoms? Also, do you have dizziness as a symptom?

Hi Muller,

From time to time i do get the dizziness and light headedness, but mainly i get faint spells at random where it feels like if i dont sit or lie down ASAP, im going to pass out, in which i have before. I also get dehydrated in a matter of seconds. My body literally feels like a deset even if ive had enough water for the day.

The ear issue is quite strange and no one has been able to tell me whats going on, but after getting all the probable MS symptoms, im thinking maybe this is just another one.

What tests have you undergone for MS?

And what are your symptoms and how bad are they?

Im sort of just getting used to all of mine.

Elle.

Hi Elle, I have just read your post and thought i would reply and say i too have problems with my ears. I was dxed with RRMS 5 years ago and for the past year or so my right ear pops its inside and really irratating also my hearing in that ear is not as good as it was, so maybe it is an MS thing.:)

Thanks dawnies,

Its so strange how all these symptoms have been around for so long and i never would have imagined in a milion years that they would be MS related. Its bizzar when you begin to put all the pieces together.

What is that you were diagnosed with?

What is that you were diagnosed with?

Dawnies said RRMS, which is Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.

read a peice tonight on uncommon symptoms of ms, ear problems are on that list, i too have problems with my rt ear, it completely stop working about 10 years ago and happened over a two to three week period

another reply said they had a high pitched ring, i also have that even in the ear that no longer works. that is a real nightmare. it is also a lymes symptom
i was dx with ms june 06 but had it for years but before that, just small symptoms that would come and go, tingling, numbness ect.
lessions in cspine, numbness from bottom of feet to chest and total bowel shut down, four mri's, white matter and a host of other symptoms and i got dx's but the ear problem is the only thing that never gets better or never changes.
through the hole mess w/t ms my ear was the only thing that the docs could not figure out and being one of my first major attacks it did not make sense.
the article on ears states that the problems usually get better during remission but i say not always. we can not ignore anything.

Only recently i have had problems with my left ear also, i wasn't able to hear properly my doc sent me to an audiologist and he told me that i had sensory nerve damage in my inner ear. He recommended a hearing aid but to be fair he was only going on what he knows as he is not a neuro. I went back to my doc and she said that its an inflammation on that nerve cause by my MS as i'm going through a relapse at the moment, she reckons that it will probably go away and my hearing will be back to normal when the inflamation goes down. I can feel an improvement but it was quite frustrating and i only had it for 3 weeks. I am due for an MRI in a couple of weeks so i'll see what damage has been done. I know this is probably not what you want to hear but i've learned not to ignore any symptoms even though sometimes i feel like a hypochondriac! good luck :)

Thanks pepikins,

My ear issue has been ongoing EVERYDAY for the past 5-6 yrs. The docs are baffled and dunno what the issue is, but with all these MS type symptoms im getting at the moment, im thinking this is just another one.
Im hoping an MRI will let me know whats going on there because its soooo frustrating and uncomfortable.
