This is my first time posting and I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me.
About a year ago I was overwieght and starting getting really bad spasms in my leg. The doctor said it was from malnutrition. As soon as I found that out I start losing wieght. I felt great and lost about 40 pounds in maybe six months. Then I went through some pretty depressing stuff and I started binging.
Now I am feeling a lot better mentally but can't stop over eating. I binge everyday when I get home from school. I always tell myself that I'm only going to have a little snack but it ends up being more and more. The same with meals. I'll decide I'm full but then keep eating a little more.

Look in to the Atkins diet. You can really get your weight under control with this diet. No sugar or white flour or pasta can be eaten, but just about anything else. Also make sure you eat protein for breakfast.

You might be feeling better mentally, but that doesn't mean the emotional factors behind over eating are gone. Ask yourself WHY am I eating more?

You need to eat more throughout the day before you get home. Start packing pretzels, fruits, and veggies, or turkey in your backpack for snacking at school. If you keep something in your belly throughout the day you may not overeat so much after school. Also, drink lots of water. If you are hungry, drink water instead. It will fill you up and you may just be thirsty instead. Sometimes your body feels hungry and all you really need is water. Also, talk with your parents about getting rid of the junk foods around the house so that it is harder for you to binge on them. This way even if you do binge it will be on good foods. Which is better than junk!!
Also, get busy. Join a club or sports team so that you will be busy after school. You could play softball, soccer, cheerlead, gymnastics, ballet, and many more. If you get involved in sports you will be getting exercize instead of eating-which is a plus, because you will be getting in great shape.
GOOD LUCK
Good luck!

In the past I found myself in the same situation. There was an old TV ad that said something like, it is not what you are eating, it is what's eating you.
Now, the hard part...SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. The only person who expects you to get through this on your own is YOU!
Meanwhile the Big Three Rules Of Weight Loss Success Apply to you...
1. Make your home a safe haven, remove all foods that do not support your goal of stopping binging. That means throw it away, give it away, don't eat it and don't keep it in the house. If you are going to binge you will have to do it IN PUBLIC.
2. Write down everything you put in your mouth before you eat it. All of it. This will give you the opportunity to appraise the value of what you are eating and give you an opportunity not to eat it.
3. Get the support of a trusted friend. Explain your goal and make sure they support your goal. You should not have an emotional investment withe person you choose and that person should not have an emotional investment in you. NO FAMILY, CLOSE FRIENDS OR LOVERS A health care professional is your best bet.
You must seek the council of a professional if you are going to reverse the condition.

Kathleen DesMaisons has a book called Your Last Diet that might be of interest. One of her first recommendations could be started right away (and personally I find it very helpful to keep eating under control) - eat protein at every meal, at least 15 grams (3 meals a day).

Yes, eat more early in the day. Eat every four hours some protein and complex carbs, veggies. Cut out all the white stuff, Coke, sugar, cow's milk. Eat organics and stay away from tap water (no flouride or chlorine)
But DON'T - I mean DON'T go on Atkins - unless you want to get really really fat and never be able to lose weight again! It ruins your metabolism. You get good results at first, but then you pay baby!

The Atkins diet & the Sugar Buster diet are two of the best diets.
They mainly require you to swear off sugar & high starch products. This means going back about 75 years in the American eating habits.
Back before sodas or pop, back before fast foods, back before white breads, back before sugar cereals, back before burgers & fries, back before all of the present day teenagers food.
Believe it or not but people lived well back then & everyone was not fat. Humans lived for thousands of years before all these fat making things appeared for teens.
Yes change your life style, go on the Atkins or Sugar Buster diet.
Turn off the TV helps too. It requires you to do something physical for a few hours.

Has anyone ever tried the Diabetics diet? By this I mean following the diet you would have to if you were diabetic. I have heard that this is one of the best ways to eat. You are allowed to eat small amounts of starches(one serving,ex.1/2cup rice), but protein is a must with every meal. No cereal for breakfast(too much starch)toast with peanut butter is great! Or an egg and cheese.
Also note that carrots, corn, & fruit juices are high in starches and yogurt is not a protein! I found this out when I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy.

i agree with lynneat, DO NOT try the atkins diet. any diet that calls for restriction of a certain food group, ie-carbs, is extremely unhealthy. AND you will lose weight initially on this diet, but it will ALL COME BACK and then some when you start eating normally again! so unless you plan on eating high-fat, low carb food and NO bread, pasta or sugars for the rest of yoru life, atkins is simply a short-term diet. its not a healthy long term eating plan.

well since ur in school, most schools have sports teams. join one, who cares if ur out of shape or a little over weight. Exercising is one of the simplest ways to feel better about urself. And ull learn that when u run around ur less likely to come right home and eat, also in a efw months ull notice a big change in urself.

Okay, you didn't say how old you were but just a word of caution. If you are having problems with weight now and you are under 25 years of age, you better find a good plan you can stick with. As you get older, middle age, the body can do some strange things that we don't control. One of these is gaining weight regardless of our stop measures.
I will suggest a few things. Remember, exercise tones you and and strengthen you system: immune, organs etc.,.
What you put in your mouth/eat, determines weight loss as opposed to thinking walking 3 miles a day would do it.
Here is some basic things. Think of food in terms of Carbs, protein, starches, fats, sweets..that kind of thing. Okay.
Now, also remeber, food is Medicine. You must put food in its proper perspective. Too much of the wrong medicine will cause disease.
Next, remember your biggest meal should come in the morning. I didn't mean to say big, because we should not eat big meal. What i mean is a half toasted bagel with butter and jelly, 2 eggs, 2 turkey sausage links, water; no milk or juice. Now, this is breakfast.
Now, make sure you walk when you don['t have to ride, take the stairs, and do scheduled work outs.
Now, after your breakfast, your biggest friend is water, sip on it throughout your day. at mid-day, have a small piece of fruit. Remember, fruit is Carbs, and it can make you gain weight too, but it is a good Carb..Okay.
Now, for lunch, walk a few blocks if you have a sit down job. Then, have a another piece of fruit for lunch.
For dinner, have some nice raw vegetables, along with some steamed vegetables, and perhaps a small baked piece of Salmon. You're done for the day...eating wise.
You may buy you some raw almond/walnuts unsalted to eat a few for snacks.
Back to the water. Do not eat after 6pm. Limit sugar, candies, pancakes, pasta and other starch and carbohydrates.
In a little time your body will start adjusting to eating less, which is something by the way that the body loves.
Remember, the body is designed for a little veggies, raw nuts, and fruit. God designed it for that. The rest is icing on the cake so to speak.
Good luck.

biggest advice that I can offer is enlist someone to help you with your eating. Ask this person to make sure that you are not around unhealthy food, or that you at least eat it in moderation. I have noticed myself that whereas my favorite food was once ice cream, which I would have daily, once I was completely removed from the environment where ice cream was readily available, I started craving it less and less.

Ok, truthseeker's meal plan, although it has some good points, does NOT have enough calories for a day, particularly if you are exercising. Never underestimate the importance of cardio and some kind of weight training - developing your muscles will automatically raise your metabolism because larger muscles burn more energy. And don't think of fruit as something that will make you fat. You can have more than "one small piece of fruit" for lunch. Eat lots of fruit (well, keeping in mind your digestive tracts of course).
The whole mentality of trying to lose weight without exercise, or with minimal exercise, is, I believe, an unhealthy one. Exercise not only tones your muscles and your heart, but it stimulates your brain and (I've found) gives you a different perspective on health. I've drifted away from the calorie counting and the guilt and I feel fantastic, because I've made exercise a priority. I feel so much better about myself, and I believe it's a healthier way to lose weight than to concentrate primarily on the strictures of an eating plan.

I saw the first post and figured maybe someone could help me. So, here is me in a nutshell im 16, im about 290 - 300lbs., "6'3inches tall, I live in Valpo where its getting colder out, sports in the school systems here are suicide (I tried out for football and the coaches are insane and its not fun), I have the same problem with overeating after school as the person in the first post, and I also know the Atkins diet is severly unhealthy. How in the world will I be able to lose weight. I really need to because I don't like how I look or feel. I have friends in school, but I mostly like to play on the computer rather than hanging out with them. So, my only chance is diet, but I live with my parents, and two siblings and if I did talk to them about throwing out all the junk food it wouldn't be fair to the younger two whom actually have a metabolism. I also am awear that no diet pill, fad diets (electric shock belts, and exercise instruments that work only one body part), or anything other things besides a truly good diet plan and regular exercise will get results. Anyone with info. on how I can lose not just weight, because that could be anything like muscle, but how I can lose fat. Nobody suggest that I buy a diet plan book because well first off I and my parents don't have the money (check book problem), and secondly many of them were writen by people looking for a quick and easy dollar, sure some of them may have been writen by doctors but who knows for sure. Also you may suggest that I get a job to help with exercise plan, well that would be cool and all cartboy doesn't sound like fun, and I know a job isn't suppose to be fun; however, remember I said it is getting colder out and winter will hit anytime.

TroubledTeenager,
You haven't even started a diet yet,and already you have thought up all kinds of reasons why you can't do one thing ,or another.
You say Atkin's is severly unhealthy. Well I have been on Atkin's diet for 22 weeks.I've lost 66 lbs. My chol.is now great,my blood sugar is great. As a matter of fact I'm healthier than I have been in a longtime. When you can decide just what exactly you can do. You might want to ask your Dr. for some help with a diet. Plus you should do it while you're young ,before you start to have health problems. Good Luck! sjg
