Anyone who has HPV can pass it to future partners. There is no "typical" carrier. It is not gender specific.

However, there is now FDA approved test that is used on men to detect high risk HPV. So men aren't usually aware of having been exposed to high risk HPV unless a partner tells him that she has high risk HPV. Women are tested at the time of their pap (but with a different test - if the doctor orders it) so women are usually the ones who are notified of having HPV. I think it is assumed by many people that "women give it to men," but there is no reality to that. Women just know if they have it (if their doctor has tested them). Men don't know because they aren't tested.

Does that makes sense?
