Also, on antidepressants and haved gained weight, although, I have been overweight my entire 33 years. I am trying to eat healthy and be more active. Really finding it tough. Chocolate and sweets are a big issue, was wondering about this high fibre intake. More fruits, vegetables and higher cereal fibre. Some opinions would be great. I have joined weightwatchers but am really not into all this point counting thing. Also, joined Curves back in July but haven't been going lately, trying to get back into it again. Hoping to try walking but never been a lover of it. Please, help me. Any suggestions and support would be appreciated!! Thanks!!

Have you read "PROTEIN POWER", by Michael R. Eades, MD and Mary Dan Eades, MD? I too have a great deal of weight to lose (in excess of 100 lbs). My dentist (who recently lost weight) suggested that I read this book - and that I should be counting "carbs" not "fat". He suggested I look at labels and compare (there are basically 3 essential components - FAT; PROTEIN; CARBS) - Regular Foods to low fat foods to fat free foods - when they remove fat they have to put something else in to compensate - it's usually carbs. I bought the book and am now beginning to read it. I hope this helps - I know there are a lot of us struggling with this battle to lose weight - I have struggled with weight gain and diets most of my life. I'm hoping carb watching will bring some signs of progress. Good Luck to you.

I ordered a book called Lean for Life. It is a low fat and moderate carb diet. You are allowed between 50-100 carbs per day, whatever it takes to keep you in ketosis (differs for each person)which I can actually live with. I usually eat about 60 carbs per day.
You have 5-6 servings of protein, 2 salads (lettuce) 2 servings of vegetables, 2-3 servings of fruit and one serving of grains per day. You do this for 4 weeks, and after 4 weeks, when your metabolism has started to slow down, you gradually add more food for the next 2 weeks and maintain your weight for those 2 weeks. Then you do what they call "prep days" for 3 days and eat normally for those 3 days. Even allowing yourself pizza or a cheeseburger, along with your regular fruit and veggies. Then your metabolism is running high again because of eating more food and you start your 4 week/2 week cycle again until you have lost all you want to.
I started this diet in May and have gone from 315 lbs to 235 lbs in 22 weeks, which is about 3.5 lbs per week. Sometimes I have gone off the plan and gained 5 lbs, but I lost it again. So I am very happy with this diet. I would highly recommend it for anyone who has a lot to lose because you lose very quickly and it is encouraging when you see results so quickly.
As for exercise (this used to be a dirty word for me, as I have been obese since I was 10), try a recumbent bike (like a chair with pedals). You don't even have to leave the house and can watch TV if you want while you ride!
I still have about 75 lbs to go, but to be more than halfway makes the weight loss not seem so daunting. Good luck--there is hope for people like us!

Hi Thumsclerk!! You are doing great! I too started at 315, I am now at 270. I had lost 37 pounds by going to the gym and doing cardio and weight training then it just stopped. I quit going to the gym for awhile but I didn't gain any back. I started the South Beach Diet two weeks ago and have lost 8 more pounds for a total of 45. I Really like this eating plan, it fits well with my life and is very good for my diabetes. These first two weeks I did not exercise as I am testing to see how much difference it makes. So for the next two weeks I will be going to the gym every other day. Looking forward to seeing what a difference it makes. I want to go to the gym - don't get me wrong. I feel so much better when I exercise!
Keep it up and I'd love to here of your progress!

Thanks, Honeydews! Sometimes it's hard to stay connected to someone who is going through the same things you are! I am glad you have found a diet that is working for you. I, too, have slacked off on my exercise routine. But I am trying to re-establish my routine and actually rode 15 miles today. I guess part of it is feeling guilty for all the Halloween candy I ate Friday! :( But this is another week to begin to eat right, so here I go again...Stupidly, I feel like I am sometimes rewarding my weight loss by eating...like I am sabotaging myself...Do you know what I mean?
Well, happy Monday tomorrow!

Hello,
I just jumped forums really quick, I usually hang out in another forum.
I lost 100 pounds and have kept it off. Quit the fad diets
Walk everyday
Eat Meats that only include chicken, fish, or turkey for dinner
Eat only vegetables and fruits, it took about a week and I lost about 1 to 1.5 to 2 pounds a week.
And you dont even have to count calories, just stick to these foods
Need a snack? Have sliced cucumbers with salt
Need something sweet? try ripe pears, watermelon, or red grapes
Need something new? Sweet potatoes, steamed squash, broccoli, rice
It really isnt limited I didnt count calories at all and the weight that stayed with me for years shaved right off.
Just remember, fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, and turkey (meats at dinner time only)
Dont forget lots of water and occasional fruit juices are ok if they dont have added sugars.

DawnMarie, I'm just curious what you ate for breakfast and lunch and how you managed to not give in to food cravings. By the way, CONGRATS!!! on the weight loss... that's totally awesome.

I guess I forgot that important part,
I usually ate fruit like sliced apples and grapes
But sometimes I would eat something like checks with nonfat milk
Occasional cravings, we are all humans, I made mistakes sometimes, but then hopped right back on board and the weight still came off. Thats where we always scr#w up, we make a mistake and then give in and quit. DONT
Don't do that, so what if you eat a candy bar or something, eating this way and walking will balance it out.
How I did it is if I was really good all week I was either allowed to eat out at a restaurant on Sat or Sun and order what I wanted, or
Get some candy
That doesnt mean 3 pounds of sees or anything like that, but a good treat like a quarter pound of candy or a really rich sunday. Just drink lots of water after that and then get right back on track.
For lunch I would eat steamed rice and steamed veggies or sliced fruits with it.
The neatest thing is when you omit all of the junk, there is really no need to count calories the weight just comes off.
I have heard so many people say, but fruit can have so much sugar in it...
So what, when we get as big as we get or have been, our bodies are used to eating things with HUNDREDS of calories in one sitting anyways.
So eating like this throws you body for a loop and the weight comes off.
I liked salmon, trout, and chicken legs

HEY THUMSCLERK!
how is it going? I just got on the "new" board! I am now in week three of phase one of the SBD and still loving it. I did have some cravings over Halloween but didn't give into them. I haven't gotten back to the gym yet, been really busy. I know, I know, I have to fit it in. Once I get started it will be better, just have to make it a habit. I like the bike too, I usually ride 7 miles in just under 20 minutes, then weight train, then walk on the treadmill, then some more weights. Sometimes I'll do the stairmaster, but that is a killer and the elliptical is fun - for awhile!!
I will be 40 on the 12th and am going away for a three day weekend by myself, I'm so excited, going to the ocean Thursday after work and staying til' Sunday. I want to spend some time setting goals and re-evaluating where I am in life and where I want to be. A right of passage kinda thing:O)
Keep in touch!

Hi Honeydews!
Just a quick note since I am at work right now--sshhh! I am proud of you and jealous at the same time that you did so good over Halloween! You had so much more self control than I did. I have 3 kids who all went trick or treating, plus I bought candy "for the kids". So why did it just happen to be my favorite kinds (like Almond Joy)? Shame on me! I gained 2.5 lbs, but it was mostly water because it is all gone, along with 2 lbs more! I am weighing less now than I have in about 10 years. Started at 315, now weighing 233! Yeah, baby!
It has gotten cold here, and one of the most wonderful things is getting out sweaters from the back of my closet that didn't fit me last winter and now fit rather loosely. I have been trying to ride my bike more, but I am the queen of rationalization...
Do you belong to a gym? How many days a week do you work out like you described? How long does it take you? I wish I could afford to join a gym...But I am looking into something called Curves for Women. It's a 30 minutes combined aerobic-cardio workout for women only. I got a coupon, so I have to call and find out what kind of deal they have. With a big family, I am always looking for a bargain!
By the way, Happy Birthday! :jester: I am 42, so I hit the "Big 40" already, and it wasn't as bad as I thought. That was part of the reason I finally decided to lose weight. I didn't want to wait till I was 50! I hope you have a really great time at the beach and that the weather is wonderful. Is it pretty cold up there now where you live? Enjoy the peace and quiet you will have. Sometimes you just need to be alone...I look forward to taking a shower for my alone time! :D
Stay in touch and I hope all is well.
Patti

Hi!
You are such an inspiration to me - we started at the same weight! how tall are you?
I do belong to a gym, it is only $40 a month - but I live in a small town. I know we just got a curves in last year and it runs about the same as the gym, but with the gym I also have a pool, sauna, hot tub and steam room. I try to find enough to do at the gym to last about an hour. 20 min on the bike (7miles), then some weight training, another 10-20 min on the treadmill - that can make an hour go by fast. Unfortunately I had planned to get back to the gym last week for my third week of the SBD but I didn't have time, so ..............I lost nothing this past week!!!! so dissapointing but then it is a new eating plan (that I really love!) and will take time for my body to accept it. After my weekend I am really going to start working out again!!!! :bouncing:
I am also going to quit smoking for my present to myself. :D I have tried over the past years but always go back. I know I can do it this time - because it is for ME!!!!
Thank you for your support - makes a lot of difference in my attitude from day to day - sometimes you just want a cream filled ding dong - you know? :nono:
take care! HONEYDEWS/DEWSHONEY

Hi Honey,
I am 5'6" tall. My goal weight is 165 lbs, for now. I know I should weight less, but I just am setting that for my goal for now. I might want to lose more later, but I am just being practical for now.
I smoked from the time I was 12 until I was 38. About a month after I turned 38, I quit smoking and it was the best present I ever gave myself. I used a nicotrol inhaler for about 2 weeks, then I felt like I was getting too attached to it, so I just quit. I prayed a lot and just didn't buy any more. It got easier as time went by. Occasionally, my husband will smoke a cigar and I will have a puff or two of it, but it doesn't trigger me to start smoking cigarettes again. I gained a lot of weight (about 40 lbs) but I was not trying to eat healthy at the time. If I was, maybe I wouldn't have gained.
I'm sorry you didn't lose last week. But on the bright side, you didn't gain either. So, try to stay on the bright side and keep on going forward! I really over did it this week! I started the week at 235, then Halloween came, back up to 238.5, but today I am down to 233.5, so I am okay. Sometimes when I eat just a bite of something I know I shouldn't, then I can't stop. I guess that would be called bingeing. But I am trying to learn new habits, and I won't change overnight. But I keep trying and that's what counts.
Well, lunch is over...gotta go. Now look what you did!! Mmmm-cream filled ding-dongs... :D
Talk to you soon,
Patti

Hey sweetie, hang in there. Wanting to change and feeling ready to give it a go are the most important steps... and you've taken them! I am in the midst of a transformation, myself. Due to my misspent youth I developed Type II Diabetes (diagnosed June 1, 2003) - which scared the heck right out of me. So I immersed myself in knowledge. I cut out all refined carbs (i.e. flour, sugar, starches, etc...), as well as white rice, potatoes, pasta, and corn. I found a site related to "The Glycemic Index of Foods" there are a million of them - just type it into any search engine, and you'll see. It deals not only with how many carbs are in foods, but how these carbs affect you. Foods are scored, (glucose is 100) and all carbs are not created equal. For instance, comparable amounts of say, cherries and watermelon may contain the same grams of carbs, but their glycemic load are vastly different (cherries 23, watermelon 78). This means that the watermelon will raise your blood glucose, and thusly your insulin release, on a much higher scale than cherries. And sis, because you're overweight, this insulin release probably isn't being used effectively (insulin resistance)... causing you to NOT use the glucose in your blood, and this is what leads to tiredness, belly fat, hyperlipidemia, and ultimately, diabetes. So even if you're not diabetic, this glycemic index can really help... it just fine tunes things. Everyone knows to eat more fruits and veggies, less fat and refined foods, lean meats, low fat dairy and whole grains... but knowing this little tweak helped me jump start my weight loss... and as stated so astutely above by someone... it really boosts your enthusiasm when you see results. DON'T starve yourself... eat 6 smallish meals every few hours... that will keep your blood sugar (and insulin release) on a more moderate level and you'll feel better... plus you wont get ravenous and dive off the deep end. Also I splurge regularly, twice a month or so... looking towards that splurge help keeps me focused on the "now". And oddly (because I'm such a food lover) I'm happy with just ONE peice of cake, or ONE personal sized pizza... or ONE Snickers bar... as opposed to half the cake or a large pizza, etc...
As for exercise... I always smirked at those people who loved to "feel the burn". But honestly... and I'm a career couch potato... if you could feel for just one hour, how WONDERFUL you will feel after you exercise for even just a few weeks, with any regularity - I bet you'd get hooked too. Everyone at my work is so sick of me making them feel my muscles *laugh*. Get yourself some 3 pound dumbbells... walk in place while pumping your arms for 20 minutes while you watch TV or listen to music... it's a start. I found the exercise program "Body Electric" on PBS... low impact... taught by a 40-ish lady named Margaret Richard, very watchable... very relatable. The show is on daily (here anyway) she also has videos available. Sometimes when I'm exercising, I'll catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror...that alone is worth it... I usually bust out laughing...
YOU CAN DO IT!
I've lost 90 pounds in 5 months, my diabetes is nonexistent and I feel like I could jump, and never land... if I can, you can too! Good luck honey!

I just wanted to let you know that you are all very inspiring. I have decided to get the Lean For Life book and give this plan a try. I have tried so many diets (6 week body makeover, atkins, body for life) and have not had the willpower to stick to any of them. I have gained about 20 pounds these past few months and I don't even fit into any of my jeans. I have been feeling so tired and sick lately. I am getting so depressed, but I need to just get off my butt and do something about it. If you can all do such a great job with it, there's no reason why I can't. Thanks for sharing your stories with everyone, and I wish you all continued success!

Just wanted to check in - I didn't weigh this week, got home from my mini vacation after having a wonderful weekend and my mother was in the hospital. Stayed with her over night and watched her leave this world on Monday. It has been a rough year. I am not and will not turn to food though so I will check in with all of you next week.
