Can anyone tell me what hardware removal is like? I have a big staple in my foot because there was a cystic area the podiatrist found when he did my bunion surgery. I had the surgery April 4 and he wants to remove the staple because it is causing pain in the soft tissue. I have to go to the operating room and he says I need to wear the velcro shoe for about 10 days. He said I can go back to work in a few days. No major pain meds needed either. Does this sound correct? Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I had a bunch of staples removed on both sides of my foot. It was uncomfortable because it was already starting to heal, so some scab was pulled off. It hurt in the moment like ripping off a band aid.
It seems like you will feel much more comfortable with the staple out since it is causing you pain.
After my bunion removal many years ago, I had the screw removed and was walking on it with the surgical sandle right afterwards.
Hope this info helped in some way!
Good luck!

Yes, that helps, do you remember what kind of pain meds you were on. Did you need vicodin or a lesser class of drug. That staple is rather large and the podiatrist told me it might have to come out. It is affecting the soft tissue area. He said removal would take about a half hour and I would not have to keep it elevated all the time like the surgery. Thanks for the answer.

I know it is unusual, but after both my bunion removals, I did not need any pain medication.
After my recent surgery I was given diuard, (spelling?) but it was too strong, so I switched to vicadin for a few days.
I bet everything will be just fine for you!

Debbie - He told me I can have it done on a Friday and go back to work on Monday, does this sound right? Will I have a big scar? I am still afraid! That staple is rather large and he said it is irritating the soft tissue. Thanks!

the staple is nothing compared with the deep buried screws and he metal plate. trust your dr and the i believe the scar will be nothing. thank your lucky stars.

Debbie - I just wonder how "deep" the staple is? Is the bone weaker after metal is removed? How much do I have to keep it elevated? I don't want any "surprises". I know doctors always like to make things sound trivial. He said I can have it done on a Friday and go back to work on Monday. Does that sound right as well. Only people who have "been there, done that" can tell!

i think you should believe your dr. elevating will help the swelling go down and ask if you should put ice on it.
