Good morning all! :)
I keep hearing about thyroid issues that people have that complicate fibro, or are in addition to fibro. Could anyone who has hypoT tell me about their symptoms and how they came to be diagnosed?
Routine blood tests do not show a thyroid problem with me. I understand that there are folks who have borderline hypoT or hyperT, and that routine blood tests don't necessarily reflect it. What more specific tests are required to clarify this?
Thanks for any help.
Wishing you peace and comfort,
Paddy

Hi Paddy:
I have hypothyroidism. I was experiencing tiredness, thinning hair, hair turning white (you should see it now - totally silvery white and I'm only 59). I complained to my GP, which was useless. I then took it upon myself to see an endochrinologist, and she diagnosed the hypothyroidism. She actually took the blood test results that I had brought with me, and showed the numbers that my GP missed. There was no other specific blood test that was done for her to diagnose the issue. I was NOT happy with my GP - that was a no-brainer.
Blessings,
Kirstee

Kirstee - thanks.
It's a wonder - there are probably lots of folks out there with HypoT who don't know it, eh? I would be really mad too.
Can you tell me exactly what the blood tests were called? I know there is a basic Thyroid called serum T3? Then there are more detailed ones? any idea?
Maybe I should go to the thyroid board?

I'm not real sure about the type of blood test. Last time I went in, my current GP looked at the numbers and then ordered another test which tested some other "T" numbers. What she called that test, I cannot remember.

TSH Levels is one of the "T" tests. I had to laugh, cause I do that all the time, but I just had mine tested last week. I am hypothyroid after having Graves after delivering my son and going through medications and 2 rounds of radiation and I became hypo instead of hyper. When I am minor hypo (due to always needing to keep levels right which can take years for some) my hair thins, my eyebrows thin, I am extremely fatigued (beyond my usual fatigue), brittle nails, desire for carbs more than usual, cranky (ok, crankier...lol), and nothing seems to feel right. If I get too out of whack and am in major hypo, which by the way is terrible for the heart among other things which is why it is so important to get a correct diagnosis and have blood levels checked very regularly, I start to feel nauseous, spacey, lethargic and exhausted, MAJOR brain fog, no memory capacity, achy like the flu, dry flaking skin and scalp, lowered hair growth, and tachardia is more often as well as anxiety and panic attacks. Hope this helps some! And I really hope you don't have it!

Hi there! I am hypothyroid too. I am 43 and was diagnosed 3 and a half years ago. I just got tested again yesterday because my symptoms have returned and we may have to up my levothyroxine if the tests come back that I am out of kilter again. It would almost be a relief to find out that I am. So at least I know I am NOT imagining my symptoms. They test you for TSH (thyroid stimulating hormones.. I believe) and I couple of other levels.
Here are a list of my symptoms that I had when I first got diagnosed and again right now because I think it's out of kilter again.
TIREDNESS
HAIRLOSS (LOTS OF HAIR ON MY CLOTHES AND ON MY BRUSH)
ACID REFLUX FLARE UPS
INDIGESTION
DIARRHEA AND CONSTIPATION
HEART PALPATATIONS
ANXIETY!!
RINGING IN EARS
SENSATIVITY TO LIGHT AND SOUND (ALOT!)
CLUMSINESS (I SHUT MY FINGER IN THE WASHER AND THE SAFE THIS PAST WEEK ALONE)
FUZZY BRAIN (CAN'T GET MY SENTENCES AND THOUGHTS OUT AS QUICK)
SLUGGISH
AND A NEW ONE TODAY THAT JUST CAME OE.....ACHY JOINTS!
Now I fear I will get fibromyalgia too. I pray to God I don't have to deal with that too. This alone is enough cross to bear.
Please get tested and take real good care of yourself. I am the only one in my family with this. I think it's unfair! It stinks! But that's life and we all have to learn to cope.
You will get it figured out. All my best to you!

Thanks folks, for the symptom details etc. Won't be for several months before I can even get tested, that is, if my gp agrees that it would be worthwhile. We are all prone to assuming every ache and pain and other symptom is fibro. So thanks again, and take care.
Wishing you peace and comfort,
Paddy

Hi, I was diagnosed hypoT about 2 years ago. I was exhausted all the time. I was wandering around in a fog, and had packed on a lot of weight. My face and eyelids were swollen and puffy too. I am not a person who cries very easy, but could cry over the smallest things all of a sudden. My doctor thought I was depressed and actually wrote a prescription for antidepressants. She said she'd run the TSH and FSH(female hormones) but was sure they would be normal. My Tsh
was pretty high when I got the results. I didn't start the antidep. because I new I wasn't depressed. She started me on Levothyroxine and I've had to increase it quite a few times now. I recently was diagnosed with fibro. and also have a nodule they are keeping an eye on in my thyroid lobe. I would suggest getting your free T4 and if you can your free T3. Also get your thyroid antibodies if your tsh is high to rule out hashimotos. Good Luck with everything, it's not always easy getting the tests you want, you may have to fight for some of them, or switch doctors.(I did) My (bad) cholesterol was also high, and just on last bloodwork my glucose is high/normal range. I am currently taking amitripyline 10 mg. at bedtime for fibro. and loading up on vitamins and fish oil tablets. These diseases really suck but if you get the right tests and meds. you can start to feel better. I hope you get the answers you need. Kris
