Can any of you recommend the top of the line orthopaedic foot surgeron for someone willing to travel to the raleigh, chapel hill, duke, rocky mount, wilson, or greenville area. I am open to any . I am presently going to what I thought would be a good choice at duke but manybe should have chosen Orthopaedic foot surgeon instead of orthopaedic podiatrist. Ideas???

Call Duke or UNC's athletic departments and find out who they use. That's who you should see.

mmr I have had multiple foot surgeries and the latest being a bunionectomy and fusion of three toes. This fusion has been done three times and we still do not know if it is working or not. I have had other mutliple surgeries that have been done some years earlier on the other foot that seem to have collapsed. Probably 7 or so surgeries. I had all of them done except the last one that messed up by the same doc. The doc that did all earlier ones died a couple years earlier in a tragic accident. I want to see how this is going to progress and then I want an overall evaluation by the best orthopaedist in our area. I am so tired of dealing with feet. I suffer with chronic hallux rigidus also, my mother had surgery on all her toes, so did my 2 brothers. I have had the hammertoe corrections and all. pretty bad. I just want a really really thorough evaluation and titchou seems to have a good ideal. I did try to see Dr. Vail at Duke, titchou b/c he was by moms doc and also Coach K';s of Duke's Doc. I thought if he was Coach K's doc he must be the best in the world. Tough luck for me though, he has moved to California. Coach K. may very well can afford to travel to CA to see him, no me though. lol I assume you know Coach K. is the Duke Basketball Coach. Thanks for the idea. I wonder about calling and finding out who the Hurricane's Hockey Doctor is since their homecourt is in Raleigh.

I think it is a great idea to call sports teams to see who their doctors are. I called the Celtics. Their doctor does not do the ankle surgery I needed, but gave me some referrals.

Yes, I know who Coach K is. I would still call the Duke Athletic Dept and see who theyuse. They don't send all their players to CA to that guy. They have someone local they use. Or try one of the other colleges - or the Panthers. There are plenty of major pro teams and college athletics to contact.

titchou do i just call these athletic departments and ask who treats their athletes with foot problems and they don't mind telling me. Or, is there a more diplomatic way to go about it?

Sure. They'll usually tell you. If not, their beat writer for the local paper will know. I've found that in their media guides, etc, they usually just list "team doctors" so you don't know who specilizes in what but you could always check that. The one time I called for a friend who was too timid to do it, I jsut said that I had turf toe and wondered who they used for that. They gave me his name.
