I Fractured my calcaneus 61/2 months ago and had progressed to 1 crutch and sometimes able to walk for short time in house with a limp but no pain.

I have now started having pain in my knee and back in the main tendon by outside ankle. Do you think this is because I have only now started doing stretching exercises? I had theraband and hydrotherapy but was not told to do stretching exercises until now by PT. PT told me that I was having knee pain because I was using crutch too far away from body and putting too much weight on crutch and non injured foot. NOone had told me how I should be walking before this.

I have taken her advice and doing stretching and slowing down and trying to walk properly but did not expect to get this tendon pain back again.

Any advice would help as I can put up with the pain if I know that it is normal recovery

Thanks all

Pat :)

Hello Pat,
I'm no Dr. but think six months on mostly one foot would make anyones back & knee hurt because the bodies natural balance & muscles have been thrown off in the process of trying to compensate for the injury.
Maybe a Chiropractor or Kinesiologist Dr. could help.
I have a Dr. who is a Chiropractor & Kinesiologist.
P.S. hope your mother is doing well!

Best Regards,
Carole

Thanks Carole,
It is so frustrating to be taking 1 step forward and 1 step back but hopefully it will eventually improve.
My Mother is actually looking better than me at moment thank goodness.

God bless

Hello Pat,
I'm glad your Moms doing well!
I have heard the non-surgery route takes a longer amount of time to heal but does not have the danger of infection or the bodies rejection of the hardware.
You seem like a really strong gal with a good aditude.
We will see how tough I am on 10/8 when it's time for me to start walking.

Hi,
I do try to keep strong. Have been doing more stretching this week and am starting to walk outside on my own for short spells on 1 crutch. It is still very painful around achillies and tendon and some days are better than others but I never thought 2 months ago that I would have got this far. I can sometimes walk for a while indoors without crutch and not a lot of limping but not long.

Carpet makes a vast difference to walking on pavement, wish pavements were springy!!

Keep healing heelies

Hello Pat,
I'm glad your feeling better & making progress!
I was just reading the post fractured calcaneus 3 & Ed mentioned a friend who took the no surgery route & that his recovery was 14 months.
I don't like concrete thats what I landed on when I shattered my heel.

Take care keep healing heelie!

Thanks Carole,
Yes I felt better when I read about the friend taking 14 months as I am always concerned whether my decision not to have surgery was the right one so it is nice to know that others who did not have surgery do recovery eventually.
Touch wood, today and yesterday have been good days for me.

Hello Pat,
I would not have had surgery if heel bone was not shattered & displaced.
My older sister Dixie shes 58 would not not have had it no matter what.
Thought eds e-mail would be something to cheer you up.
Glad your feeling better!
It is such a slow healing process with the heel.

Best regards keep up the good healing heelie!

Thanks again Carole,
A friend of ours fell and had a spiral fracture of the tibia and fibia a week before my accident and had no choice but to have surgery. He was told that he would be in a cast for 10 weeks and then able to WB, in fact he had 5 infection sites and they have had to re operate but not all infection has cleared up and the surgeon says that his leg may bow and if it does they will know what to do.I am glad I am not going through what he is.

I think I will have to have a shoe sale of all my nice heels, some of which I have not worn, I didn't believe the doctor when he said I wouldn't be wearing heels again ever but I think he was right. Trainers don't really go with elegant dresses do they?

Never mind, least of our worries

Pat :)
