my mother has gotten to purple spots on her big toenails... they dont really seem to grow..and they dont move down as her toenail grows out ..they stay at the very top of each toenail... she has had no trauma to either toe

An injury to the matrix could very well be from the type of shoes she is wearing and not necessarily from trauma. She should see her podistrist for a proper diagnosis.
