HI! I was at the doctors office for my next round of ovulation induction drugs (femara). They did a Transvaginal U/S and said I had ovulated the last cycle, but had many cysts on my ovaries. So, they told me they wanted me to take a break from medication this month? Has anyone heard of this? I have PCOS. Why would he recommend this? Do the cysts go away???

Adkins,

I had this last cycle, after ovulation, I had two 24 mm cysts on my ovaries. The RE put me on bcp for the longest two weeks of my life. RE said it was from the clomid, and that it happens sometimes. Apparently, the follicules are supposed to collapse after ovuation, but sometimes they fill up with fluid and cause cysts. After two weeks of bcp, the cysts were down to 5 mm, and my estrogen level showed they weren't active, so I started clomid again. This time, u/s today, no cysts, so it just happens sometimes.

Thank you very much for the reply. Do the cysts make your estradiol level higher? My tests showed a high estradiol level and I was told that usually happens with clomid...
Thanks again

Hi..I am not TTC actually I had a hysterectomy in May 2002. I noticed your cyst question as my ovaries were left in after the surgery and I still ovulate and all that. Well I was dx with multiple cysts on my right ovary the largest being 2.2cm x 2.1cm. My GYN seems to think they will go away or shrink and they can be painful. Maybe he wants to see if they will shrink if you stop the treatments because that could be what made them appear. Good luck.
Autumn.

Adkins: I'm on a break month for the very same reason. I'm taking progestone (Aygestin) on days 16-28 to clear the cysts and keep my cycle regular. The doctor felt this would get rid of them. Today is day 13. 18 days until I see the doc again.

I also asked my doctor about Femara. He said it was still expirmental and would not prescribe it. Did you doc offer it to you or did you ask for it? Have you had it before? Any side affects?

Thanks,
Mindy

My doctor recommended it. I worked with my OB/GYN for about 6 rounds of clomid. Clomid did make me ovulate, but I never got pregnant. When I went to my RE, he recommended femara. He said it is relatively new. He also mentioned that it didn't have the side effects like Clomid- drying up of cervical mucus, and the thinning of the endometrium (Sp?). I have been on two rounds of femara, I have ovulated earlier in my cycle, and have had some side effects like hot flashes and headaches- the same I had on Clomid. Nothing to keep me from doing my day-to-day activities.
I am glad to hear from someone who has had the same difficulties as me. I was upset about going off treatment for a "break", however, it is a relief for a couple of weeks!! Thanks
Pam
