Does anyone know about the goods and bads of antidepressants and infertility. I currently take Prozac which doesn't work that well for me and want to switch over to Wellbutrin. I am doing IVF in June and wonder about making the switch. Of course, since I have OCD, I am obsessing about this LOL. Seriously, I can't be without something but wonder about the other choice. Anyone?

I guess I have to assume you've spoken to your prescribing doctor about taking the meds and becoming pregnant? I would recommend that first, as different meds do different things. I know that if there's a choice between serious symptoms off the meds while prego and going ahead with the meds, they usually err on the side of taking the meds. However, I have never heard that one of those types of drugs effects your fertility in any way other than decreasing sex drive.

kateisboo,

I went off prozac 2 months before we started to try and have children. I was also on it for ocd. I am not aware of any effects on fertility but I wanted to be completely clean of everything. Of course 18 months later I am so stressed with the upcoming IVF and my ocd is in overdrive. I get up in the middle of the night to straighten the tassles on the oriental rug, I vacuum 2x per day, always have that windex bottle in my hand. It is crazy!! I would definitely ask your Dr. if it is safe. I miss my prozac...lol

I was on prozac and conceived and the pregnancy later ended in m/c but the doc didn't think that the m/c had anything to do with the prozac. He said that they recommend that if you can go off it when you find out you are pg that is great (which I did as soon as I got the big +) but that if you need it, you should stay on it. This is a subject that I would get several professional opinions on before I made a choice.

I know take paxell and I like it a lot more than I did prozac. I do not suffer from depression, but suffer from anxiety and the prozac is more for depression and paxell is more for anxiety so I think it all depends on your chemical make up and what you feel as an individual works best for you.

I checked with the RE, she was all for the wellbutrin because it is category B. She was also for treatment while trying to conceive with the thought that having a mood disorder/depression/ocd etc. messes you up far worse than any drug - chemicals out of whack etc. I am making the change over this month from prozac to wellbutrin and I am very excited. Thanks for all your replies, I feel confident about the decision.
