View Full Version : SpermSurvival w/IUI

Hi there! Because I'm in the 2WW and because I have become obsessed, I've been searching the web this morning for some answers to my questions that I didn't ask at my RE's.

Skysam and I were concerned w/ the time frame sperms have for survival since the IUI bypasses the cervical fluids and I read that it is about 24 hours. That makes me feel better. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hope this helps others who've had the same question http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif

LOL~ you are too funny Mare! You are right, eggies survive for up to 24 hours and sperm can thrive on up to 72 hours! But I thought that was if they had that cervical junk to play in...the IUI bypasses all that stuff, so I am concerned that 1) I didn't release an egg and all this is fruitless and 2) if I did release an egg -and Easter is this month, how appropriate! - is DH's little men gonna be able to live long enough to seek Eggatha out and tag her to make a babah? And something else for me to worry about!! My tubes are like really long so I am skeert that ...I just need to stop right now and finish cleaning my house. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Thanks for the luck, Mare!

Okay, I haven't gone back to cleaning my house, but look at what I found - Mare, you are so smart!

A: Current research indicates that washed sperm can live 24-72 hours; however, it does lose potency after 24 hours. Another issue with IUI is that the sperm can keep on swimming beyond the fallopian tube, so the ideal window is really within 6-12 hours of the egg being released, with a larger margin before ovulation than after since the egg's viability is shorter. Sperm can live up to 5 days in fertile mucus, 2-3 days being pretty common, so combining IUI with intercourse may provide better coverage.

Before I read your last post I was going to ask if in addition to the IUI did you BD at all? I know my friend was told to do the BD the night before the IUI and also the day after and as many days additional as her DH could do..lol. BTW, I have been obsessively cleaning my house all day. Always makes me feel better.

momma & mare ...

hey great infor.... so we don't have to worry about the cervical fluid at all.. ? The little spermies stays alive only if we are ovulating --- right ? and the HCG shot should of took care of that.

Momma -- are you taking progestrone --- how are you feeling ? I don't know if its the progestrone or not but one minute I want to cry and the next minute I could just knock someone's head off. Maybe it's all the follistim i've taken ---- I could just see my baby now Ha ! watch out tyson !! Top it all off my breast are killing me. I just about have everyone walking on pins and needles --- lol let me know how you are doing !!!!

Same here Skysam! I'm thinking it is the HCG though and yep, I'm taking the progesterone, so I'm sure this is doing something funky.. I'm a bit psycho - literally snapping and yelling at DH for the dumbest things. My breasts are very senstive, tingly. I am peeing more than usual - but I read this can be from the HCG. I think that I am more worried about DH's reaction if this is a BFN for us. He has his hopes up high!!

Do you go for a progesterone check? I go Wednesday!

hey momma --

My RE never told me to go back and get tested. This is the first i hear of testing the progestrone level this soon. I don't know what i should do. If you go wed. -- I should do my level tues ???? I need to think about calling the RE... I've thought about you all weekend -- couldn't to get back to work and check the board -- Lots of prayers for both of us !! If your progestrone level is low --- what are they going to do ??????? You are taking suppositories - right ?
I asked if i could take injections -- he said that the pills are fine --- so i take 4 pills a day. What should i do ???

Skysam - awwww!! I thought of you too! I think you should call the RE just so you can get an idear of your progesterone level - or at least see what they say. By getting this test done, I'll be able to find out if I've even spit out an egg. You would be right on, if we are a day apart, then yep, you'd go tomorrow!! Time is flying, huh? well, not really, but kinda. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Let me know what they say http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif

Mare! You're hilarious! I'm glad I could tickle your funny bone! I'm trying to stay positive. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
