I have been on perscribed Dextroamphetamine Sulphate for a year and a half now, same time I was diagnosed with ADD. My psych perscribed me to seven 5mg tablets a day. When I started that I obviously had the WORST insomnia and restlessness! So for the past year I only take five 5mg tabs per day. And to add, I don't take them EVERY day, only monday to friday when I'm at school and sometimes a few on the weekend to catch up on work.
I'd like to know, is this bad? Taking five dexies every day for FIVE days (or more!) every week :| im still adolescent and I may be still devoloping my brain and mental skills. But at the same time this is such a crucial point in my life, sitting my final TEE exams!
Also does anyone know the long-term effects of dexies on the body? Like mentally and/or physically? I find I sweat REALLY easily now :| only started about 7 months ago though!

Oh and to add, Im not addicted. I know this because I only take them when I need to and don't have an urge to feel "normal" on them

Hi Tessta91,
You are actually being rather responsible in your med taking! My psych would NEVER let me take 35 mg of amphetamine off the bat. He believe's in slowly bringing up dosage till it is adjusted right. You are slightly higher than I am on amphetamine (I take adderall slow release) and take 20 mg of that daily. 15 mg long lasting, 5 of the regular lasting. If you are being careful with it, you should be fine. I was out of work for 2 weeks after gall bladder surgery and I do the same thing that you do, weekends only if I have something that I really need it for. Anyway, I stopped taking it for the two weeks with no ill affects. I had plenty of energy when I came home from hospital. So what I am saying is, if you are comfortable with the help you receive from the medication, don't worry about it.
I hope this helps you.
Liz

You would not even believe the amt of Dex I was on for 8 yrs. When my doc retired I had a horrible time finding one to prescibe Dex to begin with and the amt was sooo low, I went thru withdrawal. Really upset me because aren't Dr's supposed to do what's best for us? Not just keep them out of trouble? I take 60 mg now after he slowly raised my dose and go to sleep driving sometime. Tried Adderall and others and I can't think, focus even if I do get out of bed. I know I'm addicted but I'd lose my job and not be able to function with my meds. Trying to slowly taper off with my husbands help but it's sooo hard. Especially, as I hit menopause and my brain went way off track! Please, anyone taking this drug, which I think is the best in the world for me.....be careful. I hate the thought of being 80 and (long way down the road) and taking my Dex to be able to rock on my porch. Even my boss ask when is my meds going to be refilled.

Thanks Liz, thats good to know I'm not the only one who thought my phsyc overdid the perscription a bit. When I went to check up with him and explained I prefferred only to take five a day and then had the opportunity to use any spares for unfinished work, he kinda bluntly said "you should be taking seven, your allowed to". Dexies have a high risk of addiction :\
And I'm not sure how long I'm going to be on them for.. because originally I was going to use it as a 'band-aid' for secondary school until I got into uni, but seeing pleasing results (I was really struggling with grades, were talking not even graduating!) I think my mum and I decided we're going to continue use for them.
I think the term 'amphetamine' just kinda gets me weary :P
Thanks guys

Oh and another question, to add
I don't really know the "science" of dexies, I remember someone explaining to me.. that dexies have a different effect on people with ADD/ADHD then they would on a person who isnt diagnosed with it.
True? Myth? They said it had something to do with turning certain receptors on and off in your brain (Or maybe that was the internet ahhh :P)
