Hi, I am 36 and have always had regular periods - June was the last time I had one of these! After my last normal period in June, I then didn't come on again until 15th August, this period lasted the normal amount of time and was the normal type of flow and it finished on 21st August. However, I then came on again on 25th August! This was normal to heavy and lasted 11 days.
My next period came at my normal time of the month on 25th September, and 13 days later, I am still bleeding. I have no pain at all, just the occassional dull ache in my lower abdomen that I would get with my period. The fluid is red and has slight clotting every now and again - again nothing unusual.
I have made an appointment at the doctors and they are going to give me an internal and do some blood tests - I am really worried about the outcome - what could the possible causes be?
Please help.

Lou- It is so hard not to worry as I am the biggest worry wart of them all!
The bleeding could be from perimenopause, fibroids, polyps on your endometrial lining. There are many many reasons for what could be going on and not all of them are that bad. Good to hear you are going to the Dr. to have it checked out. I know how scary it is. I just went in because of prolonged spotting after my period was over and they did an internal, and then made me come back for a ultrasound. They found a polyp on my endometrial lining and then I had to make another appt for a biopsy. My Dr. just called back yesterday to say it was benign. Keep us updated as to what you find out.

Thank you for your response. I go to the Dr tomorrow, I am booked in for an internal and blood tests. The thing is, I go on holiday in 7 days time and I'm thinking I probably won't have any results back before I go and I am away for 2 weeks, I just dont want to spend the whole time worrying about it. I am also a worry wart and always think the worst. Did you have blood tests? Do you know what they test for?
I don't really have any pain, just the on/off dull ache that you would get when you first start your period and to my thinking, there would be a lot more to worry about if I was in pain?

I only had a blood test to check my thyroid to see if maybe that was out of whack. It came back fine. My Dr. just did an internal and said everything felt fine, but ordered an ultra sound as a precaution. They asked me during the ultra sound if I had any pain anywhere and I said no. I agree, I would be more worried if I had pain as well. Your Dr. may put your mind at ease before you have any kind of testing. Let me know what you hear.

Thanks again for your reply. I went to the Dr this morning but they couldn't do the internal as I was still bleeding, so they took the bloods and put me on hormone medicine to stop the bleeding. With the bloods they are testing for Thyroid, anemia and hormone imbalance. Hopefully the bleeding would of stopped by Tuesday for when I go back for an internal and hopefully the blood tests results if they are back. If the internal and bloods prove inconclusive then I have to go for the scan but that won't happen until at least the beginning of Nov cos I am on holiday for two weeks. Hopefully something will show on the blood tests so I don't have to go as far as having the scan and it dragging on for weeks. Fingers crossed! Have a good weekend!

What kind of hormone pills did they put you on? Birth control pills? Maybe your thyroid or hormone imbalance will come back with something wrong. At least then you will feel relieved while you are on holiday. Are you still bleeding or will you be able to get your internal on Tues? Let me know what you hear.

Hi, just got back from the Dr. Bleeding stopped within couple of days of taking the pills, they are hormone pills, not actually the pill, don't know if I am allowed to mention their name on here! Blood tests all came back normal which was good but would of preferred something to show up on those for Thyroid or hormone imbalance, like you say, could of put my mind at rest. So now have to go for ultrasound which won't be til at least beginning of Nov now cos on hols. I asked what they would check for and they said polyps, fibroids, the thickness of the endometrium lining and masses on the ovaries - as you can imagine, its the last one I am worried about.

We are all worried about masses on our ovaries- that is the scariest thing to think of. However, I would think if your ovaries were involved with your bleeding, you would have some sort of pain in that area or in your back. Both fibroids and polyps are extremely common and would cause the symptoms that you are having. My polyp only caused prolonged spotting/light bleeding after my period should have been done. But, when I called in to make my appointment for the biopsy they asked if I was bleeding heavily, which lead me to believe that most people with symptoms do. I will pray for you to have a fun, relaxing holiday with no worries! Enjoy yourself as it really is probably nothing to worry too terribly about! If it was, they would have made you do the ultrasound immediately. Let me know what happens when you get back.

Hi, yes back from holiday now, had a great time! Stopped taking the hormone tablets they gave me to stop be bleeding before I went, stopped taking them on Friday and came on on Sunday and I think it has almost stopped, however this has happened before and within a day has started again so fingers crossed it has actually stopped this time! Still waiting for my scan date to come through, should be any time now. Had another blood test this week, they wanted to test me between day 1 and 5 of my period to see what the hormone levels were like then, should have results back today or tomorrow. Thanks for asking, I hope you are ok.

Hi Lou....
I can tell you my story and maybe it will help? I was having normal periods until june of this year. I started my period in june and bled for 1 1/2 months. Never had a problem before that. Well, I did spot after having intercourse in may 2 times when me and my husband was on vacation in Mexico UGH But other than that.....everything was ok. I went to my gyno doctor and she imediately did a biopsy. And then ordered blood work and a pelvic and vaginal ultrasound. The blood work all checked out ok. Hormones, throid ect. But the ultrasounds showed ovarian cyst, 2 small fibroids and an overly thickened endometrial lining. The lining was 2 times the thickness it should have been. So.............after getting all test results back, my doctor decided that a endometrial ablation is what I needed. I had that done on oct. 16. So far, I am still bleeding from surgery. During surgery she did a hysterscopy, a D & C and then the ablation. I go back to see her today for a post-op visit. So, maybe this will help you? I hope so....just reply if you have more questions and I will be happy to answer if I can. My age is 47....if that helps any :)
Good luck,
LYNN

Hi, sorry for the delay in coming back to you, getting over holiday and busy at work. I have my ultrasound and internal scal tomorrow at the hospital. Really nervous about what they might find and keep thinking the worst. However, I stopped taking the hormone tablets the Dr gave me to stop my bleeding when I came back from hols and within a couple of days, started bleeding. However, I had a normal period with no prolonged bleeding like I have been, and no bleeding since (almost two weeks) so I think thats a good sign. Not bothered about the scan itself, just the results really, oh and having to deal with a full bladder for the scan! Hopefully everything will be ok or if they find something, its minor and can be treated. I had another blood test when I came back from hols and I had the results of the swab tests and they detected a bacterial infection and gave me strong antibiotics, so maybe treating that is why I had a normal period this time? Its all guess work really until I know the results of the scan, just praying for good news. Fingers crossed...

Hi, thank you for thinking of me! Sorry also that I hadn't come back to you to let you know the update! I had my scan a couple of weeks ago and everything was fine, I have also had two 'normal' periods at the right time as well! So hopefully was just a blip and we are back on track!
Thanks again for taking the time to ask! Have a great christmas and new year!
