View Full Version : The scoop on the new RE

Ok, just got back. Dog is going to have to wait to pee because I have to put this in writing before I forget.
There is good news and bad news. First, I really liked Dr.Treiser. She was not warm and fuzzy (damn) but she was very pleasant and took a very long time listening to me. Her nurse was outstanding as was the receptionist and Ins. Girl. The bad news is that my FSH is higher that I thought. In two tests I had with my last RE one was 10.2 and the other was 11.0. Add my age (just about 40) and that does not leave a very optimistic outcome. Second bit of bad news. My ins. co. does not cover out of network infertility so I would have to pay out of pocket. If I decide to go with Dr. T we could start things rolling as soon as next week. She said she would not use bcp and lupron like last time because sometimes that has something to do with the eggs not growing. My present RE is still planning on doing the bcp for 2 months continuous and also the lupron. Dr. T uses the blactocyst system if they can which means the eggs would be transferred after 5 days and they only implant 2 so there is a less chance of triplets or more. She said that she would start me out on 10 amps and also would be giving me cetrotide (sp?) I think Mare is on this med. Here is the downside. Spoke with DH briefly on phone and we will discuss further tonight. He said he "doesn't give a sh-- how much it costs!" I on the other hand feel like maybe (as much as I hate present re) we should give it one more go and then if it doesn't work out go with new RE. Dh said he would want to speak with present RE and tell him what we learned from Dr. T and I said that might really piss him off as in the past I tried to suggest or ask something but he is not the kind of RE that is patient with people. You know assembly line - get them in and out asap! As mare said they discount cost but it is still expensive. IVF from Baseline U/S to beta test is $7,000, ICSI $2500, Embryo freeze $1000, Sperm freeze $700 plus she wants me to get another HSG which my ins wont cover because out of network $1000. Part of me says you cant put a price on a child but I don't want to throw money away either. So DH and I will have a nice long talk tonight and discuss the pros and cons. He said he would rather wait a month before starting again. I think the whole injection and hormone induced crying upset him. I told him I was better prepared and knew what to expect next time.....vent on the board and eat a load of donuts..lol! So, any input anyone has would be appreciated and I will let you know what we think after our little chat. Nothing is every easy is it? and speaking of easy I am now off to the gym for a class (already took one this am). I think it calms me down. Thanks for thinking of me.

Hi Tmer! I'm glad you had such a positive visit - it really does sound like the only hurdle is the $$$ and you and DH will talk that out tonight. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif He has such a wonderful attitude! That is like how my DH is, he could care less about the money.

Hope you have a great time at the gym and I cannot wait to read what you and DH decide on doing! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

P.S. You should tell the current RE what you did, just to piss him off. He needs to be aware that you were so miserable http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/mad.gif you went elsewhere.

Tmerone,

It sounds like the doc spent some meaningful time with you. The blactocyst sounds intriguing. Did she discuss success rates with you? Also, which method do you feel with grow your follies the best? Is you old RE going to make enough adjustments to get them to grow? These are difficult questions and you don't have to answer me. I thought they might be useful considerations when you make your choice.

I'm not going to try to offer advice when I can't make this decision myself. It's very difficult. However, would this new doc work with a gyn on your plan to do the baseline and HSG? That might save you some money.

Good Luck!
Mindy

Tmer,

I'm glad you had such happy vibes from the new RE. She sounds good. I agree with Lisa though that should you decide to go back to the old RE (which really depends on how miserable he makes you) that you should let him know you were dissatisfied to that degree to go hunting elsewhere. It's a sign, perhaps he'll wake up and smell the coffee, and maybe try some of the suggestions, or maybe he'll be a boathead and again point you back to your Dr. T.
Your DH sounds precious! I don't care what it costs! I don't know if my dh would say that. That's the kind of comment that just makes me want to cry, sounds like he'll be a great papa to your great mama. What a great home you'll provide for your baby.
Keep us up on the goings on of this discussion.

That is great you have a new RE, but I dont understand why you arent doing injectibles with IUI first.. I dont understand how a doctor wouldn/t put you through something less invasive such as IUI..?????? My husband is the same way..he said hed quit his job if he wasn't able to drop the current crappy ins. we have.. But thankfully at least well have ins. that covers everthing now frm iui to ivf...He gave them such hell on thephone..and said this insurance sucks!!! and he never talks like that...lol!
It is very important to shop around..You are the customer not the doc. My RE is nice..but she doesnt mess around..She is kind of the serious type,,takes a lot for her to laugh ! oh well,,as long as shes doing a good job,,,,,,,,,,, good luck to u!!

Ams - I will reply for Termone on why not IUI instead of going right to IVF - because she is almost 40 with E2 level of 11...

Termone- I like Dr. T. I like Dr. Natofsky as well. They both made me feel very very comfortable, and it is an assembly line there as well.. very clinic like in the morning... the only difference is they KNOW YOUR NAME! Dr. Natofsky remembers me very well... He thinks I have only seen him except my initial consult... (not true...) He even thought he did my IUI.. he didn't.. but he was quite happy to see my BFP...

Anyway - When they do the HSG they will also take care of any tubal problems while in there. They will open blocked tubes while doing the HSG if it is needed...

Anyway - Glad you had a positive experience... I should have told you she was not a fuzzy person... very clinical as my dh put it.. but VERY smart!

I have a cousin whos friend had 6 IUI's with clomid done..and she was 40 actually and they got pregnant! (6th try)and she lives in Jersey too.. I guess it depends what doc you go to. Also, every ones body being different, I guess it all depends on each individual.

Hi Tmerone.
Glad you went for a second opinion .
I to have a "high" FSH I have been tested 3 times
I st time was 11. some thing then went down to 10
2 weeks ago it was 8.2 .
From what I have learned from my RE and the folks at the A.I.A fertility conference that I went to Sunday is that as you get older you FSH starts to fluctuate. It is most usually a sign that your ovarian reserve of eggs is running out and the quality of eggs is on the decline . My RE started me on injectables / IUI
I produce only 1-3 follies and am concidered a "poor responder" - not enough eggs for IVF . I was on 4 ams a day Pergonal Ist cycle . Last 2 cycles were 6 amps Repronex . My RE said statisticlly chances at my age are about equal with IUI as IVF both slim . I am probably doing 1 more round mid May or June , Have a second opinion appointment scheduled for June . I am seeing a Acupuncturist who specializes in infertility Friday . How many eggs did the new RE say you needs to produce to do the IVF cycle . I hope + pray whatever route you take gives you a beautiful baby !!!!

Dr. said she would not mess around with IUI as bmoncher said because of age and my fsh. She did say that if I didn't produce enough eggs for IVF she wouldn't waste a cycle and would do IUI. I guess she is going to be pretty aggressive as she would start with 10 amps. She also wanted to do the HSG even though I had one done before my lap to "make sure the lap was successful" which I took as her questioning what the other RE did. DH and I discussed briefly and I think we are going to go with new RE. He said I don't want to look back 10 years from now and say I should have spent the $10,000. He is the best. I will let you guys know of any updates. I also think we will wait til next month just to get our heads together and of course our MONEY together...lol.

p.s. she said since I didn't respond well to clomid the first time it would be a waste to try again. I have to tell you I feel older and older everytime I leave a RE anymore!!!

Go Tmerone !!!!
what kind of injectables did she say she would use ? Did you feel more comfortable because she was female DR ? or just a better " bed side manner " and listener .

IF WITHIN THE YEAR, I WOULD TELL TRESISER, HERES MY OLD HSG, DO YOU SEE ANYTHING YOU DO NOT LIKE? AND TELL THEM YOU HAVE TO PAY 1000.00 FOR IT...I HAVE AN IDEA, CAN YOU GO TO YOUR OBGYN? WHO YA USE? I USE DR PENNY,WHOLSTADER DOWN IN HOLDMDEL AND RED BANK AND THEY "WORK WITH ME" ON ALL THE TEST I HAVE TO PAY FOR...DAMION WANTED TO DO MY 1ST LAP, AND I WOULD OF HAD TO PAY, I GOT ALL PISSED, WALKD OUT OF HIS OFFICE, DOWN THE ROAD BY TREASURE ISLAND I WENT, AND I SAY DR PENNY, HE WANTS TO DO LAP TO CHECK THINGS OUT, DR SAYS OOO U HAVE PAIN? Mare,

Dr. Penney is my ob-gyn too!! I love him. When moved here I had to give up old Dr. who I had for 13 years. I love Dr. Penney and I told my DH that I was going to see if He could order certain tests for me and that way I won't have to pay. He is the one that said I want you go to an RE because I want to deliver your baby. When my blood results came in he says right in front of me "Oh sh--, your fsh is so high" I am going to call Treiser insurance girl today and my insurance co. also and see what I can do. I definitely think we are going to stick with Treiser. I am going to call them today and tell them I need a few more days to make a decision. She wanted to do another HSG to see what damien did when he did the lap.

Old Flo,
I think it was gonal-f and repronex with cetrotide. And yes, I felt more comfortable with her because she was a woman. I actually told her some stuff that I did not share with old RE because I felt he would judge me. Dr. T listened to me and I think that is what made a difference!!
