How long does it take for the nerve in your tongue to recover? Or how long before I know if the damage is permanent?

Thank you!!! I had my surgery 7 days ago and was beginning to think it was the worst mistake of my life. I mean tongue numbness who would have thought it would be so annoying!

Hi cfreiling
I had my surgery about 5 weeks ago, my operated side of my tounge was numb until recently the taste bud part. I now have a metalic taste in my mouth, I am hoping this will all be gone by Xmas, apparently it can take a while for the nerve to recover. I think any kind of change is a good one even if coffee tastes like iron railings!!
BEst of luck on your recovery, I called my dr a couple of times worrying and he said guess what......Patience ;)

Hi,
It's only been a little over a week since my surgery and the metallic taste and numbness keeps coming and going. My Doctor also told me it will heal when it heals. Only time can tell. I still feel like it will never change!!

HI Cyndie,
Just try to be patient :)
Mine is still funky and its almost 6 weeks although I have a metalic taste now in stead of numbness, great choice huh!
Anyways how did the surgery go? How is your ear? DId you have major hearing loss prior to surgery? Did you have tinnitus at all? please excuse questions..... I had nasty pulsing tinnitus which seems to have lessened greatly since the surgery...which is sooo nice, I am prepared to put up with a funky tounge if the noise stays away....
Best wishes

The numbeness is now gone but the metallic taste is there. It's been 2 weeks today since my surgery. Everything went well. I didn't have major hearing loss. In fact I went in for a routine hearing test 3 years ago and found out I had OTO. I decided to have the surgery so that I the loss didn't get worse or become permanent.

I am 9 days out after my 2nd stape. Tongue numbness not a huge deal - it comes and goes, and I can't taste cheese.
I do have occasional stinging pain in my operated ear, then it goes away. Today it started itching in there - that drove me crazy. I do the "dial tone" test several times a day to make sure I can hear.
I had something weird happen after the last surgery and today it happened in my operated ear: I was on the phone and the speaker's voice suddenly rose to a very high pitch. Not exactly chipmunk-high, but much higher than their normal voice. When I switched to the other ear, it sounded normal. This happened a couple of times after my 1st surgery, but then it stopped. Today it happened when I tried to listen with my just-opped ear. Just wondered if anyone else experienced that kind of thing?
Good luck with the tongues. It's not enough to bother me, as long as I regain my hearing and lose the tinnitis. I also had that bad, and it was worse the day or two after surgery, then went away - both times. I still have some mild ringing in my "new" ear, but my first operated ear has had no tinnitis for 3 months! It is glorious, although it takes me longer to go to sleep at night - go figure!

HI TXMommy27
So glad to hear your 2nd op went well :)
I think my tounge is finnally getting better, still a bit numb but like you said a small price to pay for great hearing and no head noise.
Best wishes for a successful recovery.
