I have been struggling with fatigue, neck and shoulder pain, continuous pressure in the head, heavyheadedness and disequlibiriumm for almost a year. After a long series of ENT, orthopedic and other specialists, I went to the lab and decided to have my vitamins and minerals tested. It turned out that I was vitamin D deficient.

I am currently taking Calcium (600mgs) with vitamin D (200 IUs) twice a day. My doctor didn't want me to take Alfacalcidol because there is the risk it might increase my calcium levels to dangerous levels so he put me on a normal supplement.

I was wondering whether any of you has vitamin D deficiency and whether some of my symptoms can be caused by such deficiency. I was also wondering how long it would take for me to notice any difference in my overall health and energy levels. Any other information about vitamin D would also be very appreciated,..

Thanks,..

hi,
I had a vitamin d deficiency, but I also had hyperparathyroid, so that contributed to mine.
Has your calcium been checked in the blood?
I know that vitamin d deficiency can cause all sorts of issues, like the ones that you mentioned.
My vitamin d was at 24 and then with mega doses (150,000 ius a week), it went to 68 in 2 1/2 months. I am not sure what it is now.
Keep me posted on how you are doing and feeling on your supplements.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

My vitamin D levels were 12 when I first had them checked. After two weeks on vitamin D supplements (1000 IU a day in addition to eating fish three days a week), they went up to 19. That was three weeks ago. I also increased my intake of fortified milk and cereal which has given rise to a whole set of new problems such as bloating, gas, fullness, etc. I am not sure whether it is the milk or the supplements that are causing me these problems.

Anyway, I am still on vitamin D supplements and I am due for another test this Saturday. My fatigue seems to have improved slightly although not by much. I need to bring my levels up to at least 40 to notice any major difference, I guess.

My doctor didn't want me to take megadoses of vitamin D which explains why I am only on 1000 IU. I will find out this Saturday whether I will need to increase the dose or not.

I forgot to tell you that, yes, my calcium levels were checked and they were excellent and within the normal range. My thyorid and parathyroid were also tested. Everything else was also normal in terms of vitamins and minerals except for vitamin D.

Greetings,

I was just reading everyone's post on Vit. D Def. and wanted to share my story. Last week I could barely get out of bed. Every joint and muscle in my body was stiff, sore and basically not funtioning. I could not walk well, and could not comb my hair or lift my coffee. I went to the doctor and words went through my mind....Lupus, RA, Scleraderma, ect. I went yesterday for my labs and all my ANA...sed ratios ect. were normal. My doctor also checked on all my vit. levels and found i was very low in D and started my on the 50,000 iu of D weekly. This is all new to me,...but my question is...what causes D def. I read somewhere that being overweight could have an effect on absorptions. I hope and pray there are no underlying diseases that cause this....I know one thing....2009 will be spent eating very health, no sugar, white flour or processed foods....I have never been so frightened ....Thoughts? Comments? Blessings to all.

Hi Everyone,

I posted a couple of months ago. After taking 1000IU of D3 for every day, eating salmon at least three times a week, my levels had risen from 12ng when first tested (around mid-October) to 29.3ng (around mid-December).

I refused to take D2 (1,25) because of all the problems associated with taking mega doses of it.

From personal experience, I would highly recommend taking D3. As little as 1000IU a day plus eating Salmon three times a week were enough to raise my vitamin D levels to almost 30ng. I am still taking vitamin D as I want to take my levels up to 40-50ng.

Someone posted that they were scared of heart palpitations and high blood pressure. My advice is to take D3 and see how things go. The pros far outweigh the cons and very low levels of vitamin D can wreak havoc with the whole body and cause a wide range of diseases on the long run.

You have to realize where vitamin D comes from to know where the deficiency can arise. There are actually very few foods that contain vitamin D - it is mostly in fish with a rather high oil content, such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna. You may have heard of cod liver oil? In the days of old children were usually fed a spoonful on a regular basis. Cod liver oil contains a LOT of vitamin D!

But mostly, our bodies manage to synthesize vitamin D from the sun. Again, in days of old and before vitamin D was added to dairy products, parents were encouraged to have their children spend regular time out in the sunshine to avoid rickets. (A common disease due to a deficiency of vitamin D) In our society today (and with vitamin D added to just about all dairy products) people have a tendency to avoid exposure to the sun's harmful rays due to the risk of skin cancer. So, avoidance of the sun (and using sun protection) and with people possibly not eating as much dairy products due to fat content, a vitamin D deficiancy can develop.

Hi Mady01

I believe the 50,0000IU weekly dose is the 1.25 form of vitamin D2. The one I am taking is vitamin D3.

As for cereals, you need to check the list of vitamins on the pack to find out if vitamin D is one of them. Some cereals are fortified by other vitamins but not viatmin D. I used to buy any cereal as long as it was fortified with vitamin D. I had to stop eventually because I am lactose intolerant and milk messed up my system. I sometimes eat cereal with yoghurt.

Salmon is a very rich source of vitamin D. I recommend the canned type because only wild salmon is used for canning because of its thicker texture. Farmed salmon contains only half the amount of vitamin D found in wild salmon. Pink salmon is my favourite. You can have it with salad. I sometimes eat it mixed in with mashed potatoes (without butter, of course). You can also prepare salmon with mayo and some cheese on top.

Try to eat two cans a week.

Hello Everyone,
I was recently told I was Vit D deficient (yesterday) It's 19 or something. I am not educated enough on the deficiency to not do what my doc tells me. I was called in the prescription for 50,000IU three times a week for three months.
I went to the doc b/c I was having loss of vision, extreme fatigue, hurting bones, wanting to be alone and sleep all the time. Dizzy spells and absolutely no energy. I have been on anti depressants for a very long time and it sounds as though a vit D deficiency can be the route of depresion.
He took me off the antidepressant pills and on the 50,000IU. I hope it helps....
Although I took my first 1 last night and I am having one of the most aweful fatigue spells and blurry eye spells I have ever had. I am trying to figure out if it's b/c I'm off the antidepressants or if it's the Vit B pills.
Please help me get educated on the symptoms and the side effects of this.
With the side effects that I am having he wants to do a CAT Scan for MS.
I'm a bit worried, anyone know the odds.
Thanks for reading and for the help.:)

Hi,

I am really sorry to hear that you are suffering so much.

One of the first golden rules about anti-depressants is that one should not come off them cold turkey. Your doctor needs to wean you off them slowly. You should check with the doctor who prescribed you the antidepressants.

Your symptoms are probably caused by being taken off the antidepressant suddely. Your system is going through tough withdrawal.

Vitamin D deficieny can cause fatigue, and most of the symptoms you have mentioned.

I hope you feel better soon,..

Hello all! I thank God that I found your thread here. I have been feeling rotten for a few weeks now. It just hit me that I could be vitamin D deficient again. How quickly I had forgotten this time last year when I was feeling bad and got tested and it was way too low. The doc put me on those 50,000 units as well. IT worked. She told me that living in the midwest we are WAY too deficiant because of not having the sunshine. That is where we get the vitamin D. Even going to the tanning bed would help. I should have been doing that. I haven't been taking my vitamin D and Calcium probably since Sept. So here are my symptoms right now...please let me know if this sounds like it because I have kind of forgotten.

FUZZY SPACEY FEELING MENTALLY
TIRED
PRESSURE IN MY HEAD (LIKE ALL THE BLOOD IS RUNNING UP MY NECK INTO MY HEAD AND ALMOST MAKING ME DIZZY)
DIZZY! AND LIGHTHEADED
MUSCLE TWITCHING (I HAD THIS LAST YEAR!)
SHAKY AT TIMES
DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS (BUT I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH ACID REFLUX AND IBS)
SORE NECK AND SHOULDERS (THIS IS NORMAL FOR ME, I AM A MASSAGE THERAPIST AND I HURT ALOT)
ACHY

Does any of this sound like I am low on vitamin D or calcium again? Should I get tested again? or should I just start in on the vitamins and get the level up myself? I took my first 600 mg calcium plus D tonight. What should I do?
Thanks all!

Hi Live to Fish and all! Well I think I am gonna go to the doctor this week and have her take blood and see where I stand with my levels. I think it's not good. I think I will be put back on the 50,000 deal. I think in the meantime I will take 2 600mgs of Calcium plus D a day and try to get things going. I am going to buy a tanning package too. They say it helps. She recommended it. We don't get enough sun. Live to Fish...do you have a slight ringing in your ears at all? Or like you are sensative to sound? That is one more symptom to add to my list below. I just feel like crap! Sorry to complain. You aren't alone dear friend.

Vitamin D deficency is the most common vitamin deficiency. Drink milk, and get some sun. Vitamin D is fat soluable, so it is stored in fat cells. Your diets have probably been poor for quite some time, especially if you were losing weight at all, since the burning of fat cells will release stored D. Sun is important, since most vitamin D taken in is not in its usable form until it is converted in the skin with UV radiation.

HI All! I am beginning the 3rd week of my little blue football Vitamin D pills. 50,000 iu two times a week. My level came back at 26. Way too low. I know it should be between 30 to 80. So I have a ways to go to get it up into the middle of that. I am tired ALOT. Getting up in the morning is really difficult. I get to work and make it through the day but by late afternoon I am ready for a nap. Lately I have been getting the muscle twitching and a few heart palpatations. I know those are symptoms from Low vitamin D. But I was wondering if taking high levels of vitamin D can have side effects too like perhaps the muscle twitching. Any thoughts on that? I would love to hear back from anyone. Thanks!:)

Hi Mady! Thanks for posting. I am so baffled and frustrated tonight. I have been on the 50,000 iu for two and a half weeks now. I actually feel WORSE than I had been feeling. Are there side effects to these mega doses of this Vitamin D? Geez! I did have a mocha today which I hadn't had in awhile and it made me a little shaky. But still!! I am dizzy, just a bit and occasional ringing in ears, Heart palpatations...but not too bad. I think I had some before I started this. I am 44 and in Perimenopause too. So I thought I better add that in. :( grrrrh! But today I felt achy and sore in my muscles. It's all so weird. I am having my period too...sorry to be graphic but would that magnify my already bad symptoms?? I mean does anyone feel worse with their symptoms during their period? Like if you have cramps or muscle pain during your pain and your Vitamin D level is low and giving you symptoms would they maybe feel worse during your period??

I am so frustrated that I have a call into my regular doctor to get an immediate appt. with and endocronologist to get this all figured out.
I hope you feel better soon. Keep me posted!

Hi Tammy ,Your welcome ,oh i know just how you feel i'm frustrated too,i was told month ago vit d was a 4 omg ,and i just had a bone density that was real good ,,,so this brought me down ,i am vegetarian and this hard even drink milk i'm trying ,i'm so afraid getting one side effect that mentioned on my paper fast pounding heart ,and if i din't see that i may have taken 50,000 my dr said he has not got any complaints on vit d ,i get phobias about taking something new like this ,now reading how important it is have normal level ,and why i'm so STUCK ,i'm going drug store looking for pharmicsit to help me find lower safe dose its better than nothing ,i saw nature made 1,000 D3 ,gelcaps so i was hoping find capsules thinking maybe their better ,so this has become obsession for me ,and i can relate to what you mean about thinking of pain wondering is it from low vit d or your period ...well i am menopause now so i don't get periods but if i get any symptoms i right away think is this from low vit d,...i mean since i was 32 ,i had lower back problems palps body aches ,so now i'm 58 ,lol low vit d this is all making me :dizzy:geez this has consumed me so much .......tammy my prescription bottle says' '''vit d 1.25 mg once a week for 12 weeks than on side effect paper says D 3 maximum ...they are shaped like football and green......so i can check my paper see all side effeects not sure if you take exact same D ,i hear ringing in ears occasionally ,i don't think the mocha would make you feel that way ,i like chocolate :)i know they say causes palps etc ,but i don't know i only eat little dark.......i hope you can get an answer from your dr ,try not worry i know hard to wonder about why our bodys give off those weird feelings ,i sudfer ocd so i have the doubting disease ,i wish someone could help me to take d ,take care if you want know side effects i can post them ,i give you credit for taking your D ,i take xanax for anxiety so someone said take that than try swallow that 50,000 D half hour later :(Let me know how you are okay ,:angel:mady

Hi Mady, I am still feeling crappy today. I called the doctor at least 3 or 4 times today. The nurse and I played phone tag and never did talk to each other. The doctor is out of the office until tuesday. Grrrh! I asked for them to set up an appt. with an Endocrinologist. This is going to take forever just to get some help. Sometimes I get really panicky and think maybe I should go to the ER and demand to get tested for everything. But they would probably tell me it can wait and I need to make an appt. with an Endo doctor. I have been to the ER several times with panic attacks. This is common for me. I have xanax but I never take it....I too am afraid of drugs. I have a drug phobia and am afraid of pills. That is how I got into the low vitamin D problem. I skipped taking it since last Sept. And here I am in this mess today. It's way too low.

I am afraid...that since I feel so tired, shaky, achy....weird....light headed dizzy...you name it..that maybe I have something worse wrong with me. What if I have something that can't be cured? I can't live like this!!
I swear if this whole thing is perimenopause I am gonna be so upset. I already am. I am 44 and have plenty of years ahead to deal with this non sense. I just need a doctor to help guide me through this things. Sometimes I wish I was a doctor because I know I would be helping people. I would truly care and help them through these things.

I hope you are having a great day!

FYI: I take 2000 IU of vitamin D every day - for about two weeks now - and I feel a huge difference. My strength and energy is already coming back. I am in the middle of menopause and have been feeling tired and weak and achy. I was all ready to go on HRT but now I don't think I need to! :)

I was told that I could take up to 2000 IU/day safely. My last level measured was 22 and it wasn't rising very fast; in fact it was sinking. I really felt it. I was taking 400 IU a day and it wasn't helping much.

I take Bluebonnet brand, which isn't cheap, but is well worth the price.

Have you tried fish oil supplements? They make some that don't taste fishy. I take one that's kind of citrus-flavored. I use Barlean's ($$$) brand but there are lots of cheaper options. I take 4000 mg and within an hour I'm feeling calmer. I get anxiety symptoms but now that I know how to treat them, they're not so horrifying.

High everyone. I was recently told that my Vit D level was way too low. It came in at a 20. For the past year I've had a sunburn-like feeling over much of my body. Has anyone else had this symptom? I'm curious. Everyone talks about pain, but I'm not sure the kind of pain that people have. All my other tests came back normal, so I'm very interested in learning more about the Vit D situation. Thanks! - Marlow

Hi to all, I just stumbled across this board this evening. I to have a vit. D deficiency. My number was a 12. I took 50,000 once a week and on week 5, I could not hardly move my knees or one hip. So of course I thought it was the D and I quit it. Well it has been about 8 weeks and my cardiologist put me back on it, my number now is a 29. He said the joint pain had nothing to do with the vit. D.
He said he has been doing alot of research on vit D and he talked about how it can cause hyperparathyroid. I too have an anxiety/panic disorder, have been on xanax and an antidepressant for 28yrs now, so I too understand about the fear of drugs. I feel better reading everyones input. Thanks

Hi Arggg,Thank you for sharing info about fish oil,is their vit d in that? ...i would like try something soon ,oh i am so anxiety ridden i am drinking milk everyday and now trying eat hard boiled egg i read vit d in eggs i don't like them lol......i just bought nature made 1000 mg gel cap vit D3 ..does anyone know if tablets are better or gelcaps?i heard D3 is best i would like capsule but can't find those...maybe nature made has fish oil sounds good ,i feel like this is a phobia for me trying swallow new pill its because of fear of palpitations and how my body will react ..:(thanks again mady

Hi, no, I don't think there's any Vitamin D in fish oil. I think it has some B vitamins. I take 2000-4000 mg of fish oil a day, and 2000 mg of Vit D capsules per day. BOTH are vital to my health. Gelcaps are easier to swallow. If you can find plain oil, you can mix it with a drink.

Barlean's is the best fish oil I've found. It tastes like orange and it comes in capsules and oil form. It works really fast - calms me down within an hour, even if I'm having severe anxiety.

Vitamin D has worked wonders for my energy and muscle tone - just within a few weeks. I was taking 800mg/day and it wasn't doing anything for me. After starting on 2000mg/day I really started noticing a difference!

I just read your post about fish oils. What is this, I read about calming down anxiety? I have never heard of this and I have been on meds for 24 yrs for anxiety. I have wanted to do the fish oil thing because of its heart health but I cannot swollow very big pills and they are so big. I have tried to find smaller ones but have had not luck. Thanks for the info. I also wanted to ask in what way did the higher dosage of Vit. D make you feel better?
Thanks again.

The 50,000 IU of Vit. D is called ergokalkiferol. It calls for 1 x week but I am wondering if vitamin D3 (over counter) is better. I just read that the above mentioned prescription is Vitamin D2.
Also, if anyone is interested in having their DNA analyzed through a cheek swab I can give you info about that. You can find out exactly what nutrition is appropriate for you body.
Any info on Vit. D...please respond....ALSO..is fish oil good for anxiety??
Thanks
Tom

Hi
I have normal 24 hour urine test but D 25 hydroxy is low. about 22. Dr. wants to put me on 50,000 1 x week. Wondering if D3 (overcounter) of 5000 IU a day may be better.
Thanks in advance for response

I been diagnosed with a vitamin d deficiency about 6 wks ago @ 27. I started getting really bad lower back pain on & off my last 2 months of my pregnancy. After my baby was born the pain disappeared until 3 months later when i was breastfeeding. The back pain would come & go. Then about the 6th month of breatsfeeding i started having teeth sensitivity & pain in one my knees. I told my primary & he sent me to a ortho doc. He did a xray on my back & said my bones looked fine i probaly needed to exercise after having the baby to strength my back. Anyways i still kept getting back pain with other lil pains in other bones & was fatigued alot but i figured after i got done breastfeeding the baby it get better. I stopped breastfeeding at 13 months. The pain only got to be more. I see a a endocrinoligists & reumotologists a couple months after they ran all kind blood work & even a bone scan. Everything was normal except my vitamin d was low. I was taking vitamin d already of 1200 IU almost everyday through out my 13 months of breastfeeding but it wasn't high enough. Now since the last 6 wks of taking higher doses of vitamin d i been having even more pain & fatigue in places i never had before. I've now learned that if your vitamin d deficient it may get worse before it gets better with the pain. Especially if you were pregnant & breastfeeding at the time of deficiency. I called the endo doctor about the pains he said my body probaly wants my vitamin d level at least at 40, i also read for optimal health your vitamin d should be at least 50 to 100. He said it may take 3 to 4 months until i'm feeling better. I see him in 3 wks to check my vitamin d levels.

TEdds83;

I also would feel really achy right before my periods while i was breastfeeding my son & now i figured it has to do with the vitamin d deficiency because i never felt like that when i breastfeeding my daughter but i was tanning 3 to 4times a week while i preganant & breastfeeding my daughter & barely seen the sun & didn't tan at all during my pregancy or breastfeeding with my son. The endo says it takes time to get the vitami d back into your blood. I've been feeling all kind pains & weird feelings since starting the higher doses of vitamin d but its slowly getting better.

TEdds83;

I've been having alot these symptoms and now 6 wks ago i've learned of my vitamin d deficiency. I've been getting the acid reflux alot lately & never in my life had it except during my pregancy. Now that i've been taking the vitamin d along with tanning i've been feeling the spacy mental feeling off & on. Muscle twitching not painful except a couple times at the begaining of the vitamin d therapy i had a couple charlie horses in my foot. I was getting the sore neck & shoulders alot since the therapy its starting to get better since my 6th week but i'm still having alot bone pain in my back & other areas of my bones i've never had this severe before but its off & on but i've learned this is the vitamin d working getting back into my body. Also its the calcium working back into my bones where i've lost calcium.

I am so happy I came across this forum and this thread !!

I have been having alot of pain and probs lately and a friend of mine told me a few weeks ago to get my VIT D levels checked, so the next day I called my doc and he got me in to get some blood work and I go friday to get my results, he is also checking thyroid too !!

I am so worried about all this, I have been feeling so very bad for the last month or so !!

My symptoms include all of the following ...

I have pain that shoots from my neck to my head and it feels like my head weighs about 1000 lbs, and it just has a full pressure like feeling all the time, I get these shooting pains down my neck down to my back and into my legs, The pain in my arm is unbearable at times, it feels like its numb and I get this warm feeling that goes down from the top of my head down to the bottom of my toes on my left side, the only way I can describe the feeling, its like a wave that goes through my body !!! I don't have much of an appetite !! Most days I don't want to move from my bed, I am very tired, weak, fatigued, just all around dragged right out !! I even get stomach sick sometimes !!! MY period this month was SO painful !!

I have lost about 10 lbs just in a month, and I didn't weigh that much to begin with, I went from 120 to 109 !!!

I have 2 boys, 9 and 5 and this is really getting to me not being able to play and be with them like i use too, I am only 33 years old and should be enjoying these precious years with my boys !!

All I know is I want this pain and troubles to go away and have my life back again, one with out pain and with having energy !!

Ok I will shut up now, I guess I am just so happy to have found somewhere to vent how I feel and ask for your opinions and get some feedback from others going through something like this, I explain to ppl around me and they just don't get howI am feeling, drives me crazy !!

I hope when my tests do come back its just VIT D that is low and its nothing more serious !!

Thanks for letting me talk and be a part of this forum !!!

Hugs, Mandy

High everyone. I was recently told that my Vit D level was way too low. It came in at a 20. For the past year I've had a sunburn-like feeling over much of my body. Has anyone else had this symptom? I'm curious. Everyone talks about pain, but I'm not sure the kind of pain that people have. All my other tests came back normal, so I'm very interested in learning more about the Vit D situation. Thanks! - Marlow

I took my first dose last night - thank goodness everything was fine. Usually vitamins in this amount make my stomach upset. Not this one. I hope I get the added energy...:)

Thanks,..

I can only say to get your calcium levels checked to see if 600mg is working for you. that is not expensive. A D3 test is not cheap unless you have insurance.
I cannot answer you regarding your symptoms.
Best to you

Mine took 2 months of 50,000 weekly to come from 18 to 28. I am switching next month to one a month for life of 50,000 and no daily. The dr wants another level check in 3 months after the switch. This is my second time dealing with this. Taking the 1000 a day didn't keep my D level up and it had dropped back down. I am a pain patient from spine problems/surgeries so because of those meds I get constipated and have to take softeners and laxatives and they think that is interfering. Any other curious onlookers, high dose D doesn't upset my stomach - and I am pretty senstitive.

neckpatient, thanks for posting your experience.

It does seem from reading alot on this topic that it takes longer for the levels to come up than I thought, but as long as they are on the rise I guess that is all that matters.

Khenkels - after you take about 4 doses you will probably start noticing the difference. I don't remember reading what your level was but somewhere about mid 20s you start feeling better. For me there was a a big rise by 4 weeks, then some continuous rises. Good luck= hopefully you will be feeling better soon.

My blood test showed a mildly low Vitamin D level. My general doctor told me to take 800 mg. of Vitamin D twice a day. That is a total of 1600 mgs. daily. She is going to send me for another blood test in a month. My B-12 was mildly low also. I take one Vitamin B-12 daily. All of my blood tests were within the normal reference range but on the lowest end of the low range. She thinks it is causing me fatigue.

Khenkels I am glad to hear you are feeling a little better! I bet in 4 more weeks you will be even better! Fatique and bone pain are the first things to improve - muscles take more time. I am doing better and am still on the 1 -50,000 a month now. Next month get another check to see if the level is staying up with this regime. It makes it easier than taking another pill every day - I already have too many to keep track of!

One thing I have noticed is around the end of the month before I take the next month's 50,000 I kind of start feeling fatiqued and bad again. I guess the D level for me is very sensitive.

Yes, he tested to see where I am at. I am anxious to see how much they have come up. He told me that at the last drs conference that all of the doctors are now in the belief that if you had tested the patients that went on osteoporosis meds that the majority would have been vit. d deficient. He thinks the vit. d is a better choice. I guess if they were having symptoms why werent they?? Very confusing..
