I had juvederm injected into the hollows under my eyes about 2 months ago.
The results have been pretty atrocious-- where I used to have a loss of fat (or depression) underneath my eyes, I now have a loss of fat directly underneath my eyes, then a crescent shaped purple swelling underneath each eye, and another depression below. To put it bluntly, I'm very very disappointed in the outcome.
A few days after the procedure, I noticed the swelling beginning and called the doctor who performed the surgery, he told me to wait a couple of weeks and then make an appointment to see him if the swelling persisted. It did, and I went back 2 weeks later and he said to wait a month or so and come back again. I did wait, and the swelling intensified and so did the depression underneath it. He said he was unsure what the problem was and that I should come back again in one more month. I just saw him yesterday, which was 2 months after the procedure, and he told me there is nothing he can do, he said the problem was a "tindel effect" and not his fault and he recommended that I see a more experienced dermatologist. He also recommended a mineral concealer and said if I want he would order it for me and pass on the cost to me. Lastly, he told me that the swelling would take about 6-8 months to disappear and I would just have to wait it out.
I was very upset leaving his office, because when I did some research I found some evidence that says the "tindle effect" is usually the result of the doctor injecting the juvederm too close to the surface. I've also read accounts by other people with the same problem, who say the swelling did not go away completely, and when it did, they were left with a baggy, wrinkled area underneath their eye.
I'm not even sure what I should do at this point. I have to wear very heavy concealer, base, and powder to leave my house because my eye area is such a mess. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone had the same experience? Any thoughts, advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

I would contact the company and inform them this happened. I would also get my money back from the dr. What kind of dr did the injection?
A friend of mine had juvederm injected into her lower face. The dr who does this is excellent. However, my friend had a bunch of broken tiny blood vessels and alot of redness. She was told to wait a month and she did but little improvement. The dr felt really bad and gave her money back. She also did some lazer on the broken blood vessels.

Mel, thank you for your response. I think I will contact the company and see if they feel this problem is the doctor's fault.
I already asked the doctor for a refund and he refused. I'm not sure where to go from here...

I would see another doctor, get another opinion and hopefully someone else can help you. I'm really sorry you are going through this.

I'm sorry this happened to you, it sounds like a horror story...maybe try using an eye cream to help keep the skin tight and elastic so you don't end up with saggy skin after the swelling goes down

I am going to have juvederm injected into my nasal folds nect tues. I am now having second thoughts any positive results. I have to go to my GP in FL to do this and we live in NC. The reason i will have it done down there is because my hubby has to go for his 6 mos scans and my gp has been urging me that this is safe and to do it. He said I would need two viles at a cost of $1100.I have also been reading about juvederm and some of the side effects I was not aware of. Any responce would help. Also can I wear makeup after this procedure?

I personally would not let a GP do this. It should be a very experienced injector who is probably a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. other docs take a weekend course and do this to earn extra cash to pay for their malpractice insurance etc which is thru the roof and you can't blame them I guess. isn't there a qualified doc where you live? if you do it away from home, what happens if you have complications?

An Update:
I recently went to a board certified plastic surgeon who gave me vitrase injections to reverse the juvederm. Now most of the effects of the juvederm are gone-- I still have a few bumps, but most of the swelling and all of the blue tinges have disappeared. I also sent a letter to the doctor who performed the original injections and asked for a refund and sent him the receipt for my reversal injections. I'm awaiting his response.
Lorriem-- I would NOT go to a GP for juvederm. I'd also be wary that you say he was "urging" you to do this. I felt like my doctor "urged" me as well. Everytime I saw him, he mentioned that I should consider the injections. Please only go to a board certified plastic surgeon, no matter how much you trust your GP. The doctor who did my injections was an otolaryngologist, and has treated my family for years. I have reason to believe now, that he was nowhere near as experienced with the procedure as he led me to believe. You do not want to leave your face up to chance. You wouldn't go to a lawyer who specializes in divorce for a medical malpractice lawsuit and in my opinion, it makes just as much sense to go to a general practitioner for plastic surgery. It's not his specialty.

Shouldn't there be more regulations on these types of procedures? Docs shouldn't be able to just go to a couple classes and start shooting injections into helpless peoples' faces. I know they do and I think this type of negligence needs to be cracked down on. With as many lawsuits as there are, how is it that you can go in and have your face mutilated by an untrained or under-trained doctor and they get away with it? Poodle99 you shouldn't just be seeking your money back you should be seeking a lot more money for what you've had to go through.

Well, I finally received closure on this situation. The doctor who originally performed the injections refunded my money (minus the amount I paid for the injections to reverse the juvederm, and the money I paid for second and third opinions from other doctors). He included a long CYA letter explaining how the refund was purely an "accomodation", and not an admission of guilt--- whatever. I think he knows that he was at fault here, and I'm not going to fight him over getting him to admit it. Hopefully he'll be a little more careful with his future patients.
I also went back to the doctor who reversed the original injections. I was hesitant to get the juvederm once again, but I think having a more experienced doctor made all the difference. It's only been 3 days, but already they look so much better than the other ones ever did. Moral of the story here, I guess is to do a lot of research before getting this procedure done. Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback, advice and suggestions.

poodle thanks for this post.
i have not had any injections done yet, but am thinking i want some botox and resty (or just something for the nasolab area) but i'm scared.
i've pretty much decided i'll be going back to the same board cert plastic surg who did my implants, i don't care what he charges, i've read too many horror stories.
I am so so happy everything has worked out for you.
I used to be friends with a girl who worked as an aesthetician. she had a LPN (2 yr nursing) and could do all injections, chem peel, laser IPL. and the place charged just as much, kept her on hourly, and pocketed the difference. She expected tips. She would get all huffy when peop would call and complain with bad results, saying it's not her fault sometimes there's a reaction, or you just need to wait, or if you want come in we'll do it again. Unbelievable.
Unfortunately it's on us customers to protect ourselves and educate ourselves.
Injectables are a very unregulated business imo.
Glad you got your $$$ back too.
