Hi,
I'm wondering whether artificially-flavoured drinks like Crystal Light can still make you fat, in spite of having zero calories. Even though there are no calories, can some psychological perception of "consuming lots of something sweet" cause your body to go into fat storage mode and have many of the same negative effects as drinking fully-sugarific beverages?
Please avoid spiraling into a "you get cancer / no you don't" argument here :)

I think there are definite benefits to retraining your taste buds to a low sweets diet, wherever the sweet flavor is coming from.
It could be the low-calorie bevies and snacks trick folks into thinking they can binge on the "occasional" high fat foods. Am I the only one here who's eaten a snickers bar with a diet coke?;)

Yes, the reason is the chemicals that the artificial sweetners are made of mess up the body and wreak havoc. The metabolsim actually slows down because of the chemicals. Think about all of the money and products spent and used for weight loss, yet the rates of overweight and obsese people in this country are increasing at a rapid speed. It is because of all of the chemicals added to our foods. Most people eat highly processed foods and the fruits or vegetables that they may eat are usually coated in wax, injected with dye and were genetically modifed to grow faster and larger and sprayed with pesticide, insecticides. It comes down to the chemicals going into the body, it messes up the metabolism and leads to weight gain that it nor easily shed until you clean yourself out, eat organically and make a lifestyle change.

I've heard mixed things. Mainly the people that want you to buy it say nothings wrong with it like with those high fructose syrup commercials. (they fail to mention the crazy process to make it and the "Natural" genetically engineered corn they use) and there are people that have scientific evidence to back up claims that a product has a negative effect. Even if it is mild like bloating, gas or something. it's still a side effect. I don't want to poot more because of my chewing gum or be bloated after drinking a "diet" water? <removed>

There are MANY, MANY mixed opinions on this. I've even heard people fighting over it! Some people actually get cravings for MORE sweets when they have artificial sweeteners, and thus, gain weight that way. Then you might see the person eating a large greasy hamburger, large fries, and a diet coke, and they are wondering why they aren't losing weight. I enjoy diet sodas and crystal light and have no problem at all. My metabolism has sped up like crazy and I am at the weight I want to be at, as a result of good exercise and an overall healthy diet. I think it's best to tune in to YOUR body, since our bodies may react differently to different things. Also, don't overdo it. Anything in too high amounts can be bad for you. I just try to eat things like fruit, which are healthy to begin with. I don't like regular sodas and don't enjoy them, but I don't feel guilty to drink a diet soda, as I drink mostly water anyway.

I'm with tUrRrRa on this. I consume aspratame in coffee, diet soda, and gum. I sometimes use it on cereal or oatmeal as well. I've been consuming it for years and I'm (so far) in excellent health. Aspratame doesn't seem to make me crave sweets. However, if I eat a chocolate bar or an oreo cookie one day I have strong cravings for them over the next several days. We're all different. I know some people are allergic to aspratame and they get headaches from it. Pay attention to your body and your cravings and stick with what works best for you.

Stay away from it. Get rid of the sweet tooth by slowly introducing healthy foods...once your body gets used to this transition(not sure if you eat a lot of sugar but), you will NOT crave sweets or junk because the PH of your body while be more alkaline. Our body works optimally the more alkaline it is... the more acidic it is, the more it will crave the junk.
In essence, yes artificial sweetners does trick your body into thinking your eating real sugar thus insulin levels spike...so when you DO eat real sugar, BAM the weight slowly piles on.

I'm with Jessicca: You need to retrain yourself not to require sweets. Artificial sweeteners WILL spike your insulin. When ANYTHING sweet (whether artificial or not) touches your tongue, it signals the body to produce insulin. If you drink this drink by itself, what job is there for the insulin? Essentially, there is no job so it ends up being excess insulin in your bloodstream, which will only serve to make you feel hungry. Even if you drink it with a meal, why do you need the extra insulin? The object of a healthful diet is to keep insulin at normal steady levels.
Artificially sweetened soft drinks are harmful in more ways than one: They will leach calcium from your body and your dentist will verify this. They will raise your insulin too.
